Tuesday or Thursday, we're bringing this guy home - he's a ~2 year old Redbone, the consensus is that he's a purebred, but that doesn't matter much to me.

Backstory is - One my way home from work last Tuesday, and about 1000 feet from the house, there's this dog just wandering around in the road. I stop and he's very friendly. Take him to a few neighbors houses, and none of them know him. No tags, no collar. I bring him to the SPCA to see if he's chipped - No dice. He also has fleas. So at this point, it's 6:30pm, and not having so much as a doggy water dish at home, I turned him over to them. We've been talking about a dog for a long time, but wanted to wait until we had a motor home to bring him along with us on the many weekend trips we take. After MUCH discussion, some debate, and a lot of trepidation, we said OK, and decided to adopt him. We're just going to do what the other 99% of people do, and have him ride inside my truck with us.

As we dig deeper into his dumping, the SPCA manager recognized him when I brought him in. Someone had been in earlier that day wanting to surrender him as a "stray", but balked when they mentioned a $50 surrender fee. 20 minutes later, the farmer down the road from me saw an unfamiliar vehicle drive down our road, then 2 minutes later it drives past again. 30 seconds later, there's a dog running after the Jeep. From what I'm told, it's pretty common for this to be done when the dog is gun-shy or won't hunt. Based on the behavior test, I'd say he won't hunt and/or is gun shy.

The "cat test" at the SPCA went well (we have 2 at home so this was important given the breed's hunting instinct), he was incredibly non-aggressive towards cats (in fact, kinda scared of them) and good around other dogs, so we're hoping things will go as well as can be expected at home. We'll be doing everything we can to slowly introduce him to the cats in a controlled manner to try and achieve the best outcome.

We've never had a dog before, but my wife and I are both very active to keep him well-exercised, have a house on lots of land, and look forward to including him in on our adventures.

I hunted Reds for 40 some years..But, have also had Many as House Dogs & Pets..You will not Be disappointed..Thanks for saving Him..
