We've been going for nearly twenty years. The year after Steve Fielder wrote an article about hunting in the refuge, it seemed like there were people everywhere. Your best bet is an ATV/UTV, and hunting late at night is a good suggestion for avoiding some of the pressure. We occasionally hunt the North Unit when the South Unit opens, and it feels like you have it to yourself. Everybody runs to the South Unit soon as it opens.
You can pretty well forget about it when it floods. It gets to be a mess.
And be careful to adhere to the regs the refuge puts in their brochure. There are some nice LEOs, and some not so nice LEOs. One group got a ticket for parking too far off the trail one night, and parking too near it and "obstructing" it the next. We had two ride around with us all night one night, and they freely admitted they were just waiting for us to "screw up". Most aren't that bad though.
Bottom line is that its a fun and unique hunting experience in the kind of woods you're not likely to encounter anywhere else.
