Can make good squirrel dogs, have a lot of bark generally, don't do to good in hot weather with the heavy coat, and don't do too good with strange dogs typically speaking. My dad has a half WSL

I know people in Ga. Ms. and La that have them. Seem to me once that are acclimated to or raised in the states with hot weather it really doesn't appear to bother them much. Every person I have known has had issues getting them to bark, they will look up and go through the motions of treeing but not bark. Some finally did with time. They aren't the wonder dogs that were being promoted on several of these sites a few years back and all would be treeing by 6 months old if you just took them to the woods according to the people that I know that have them.

All are in agreement with the prior post that they appear to prefer to be alone and don't do as well with other dogs.

I have had 5, 3 I raised from pups and have never had any issues getting them to bark. Some bark better than others, just like any breed. I have started numerous hounds, curs and crosses of the above and the Laikas are hands down the most natural I have messed with. They are not dummy proof, You have to spend time with them and take them to the woods consistently. The issues I hear of them being idiots, non social and not "wonder dogs" usually come from couch hunters who could screw up any breed if given to them. They are not for everyone, if you like to pack hunt, like a traditional looking hunting dog or a toenailed belly rubbing treedog they are not that dog. As far as the heat, if you bring a cur or hound from northern Michigan to the Mississippi delta in November the heat will affect them. Its where they get acclimated

A buddy of mine has had a couple and has one now. He knows what he's doing and the dogs have had a lot of opportunity and hunting (game shot to it or around it). It took a long time to get them to bark, if you caught them looking up (before they got to treeing some) and got to them before they ran off, you'd see a squirrel most of the time. He has one of them still that does bark and trees squirrels. The ones he had doesn't like hunting with other dogs either. Bottom line they are not what most would accept or expect in their mind of a "squirrel dog". So, I wouldn't recommend one instead of a good feist or cur if you're a newby looking to get into the sport, go check them out......JMO!

If you're looking for something to mix with a feist or cur line to get hunt, tree power, gamey, bark easily, etc.....I'd add in some finish spitz hands down! Again just my opinion from what I've seen and heard from people I trust.

Travis, can you PM me where he got the dogs? I know there is a dog jockey that advertises in various places and he blows a bunch. I know several people who have had bad dealings with him. This guy will breed a Shetland pony to a Laika if he could just to make a buck.

If you decide to get one, do your research. There are a few real good dog men who raise a litter every now and again. And they will let you hunt with them. Beware if guy has several dogs and wont take you to the woods. If you decide to get one, I can get you numbers

I've been coon hunting since before I could remember. My earliest hunts I do remember were, one drop, and dad carried me on his shoulders! So, I've been hunting all my life, the last 23 competition hunting. All of this was with hounds or grade hounds of some kind. I had a short 1-2 year stent, where I was going to try feists and curs, due to being put on 3rd shift. I didn't even get them started very well when I got rid of them due to going back to 1st or 2nd shift. But, I did do a lot of homework, which I always do! I at least knew what I wanted in a feist or cur before looking. I think that is the most important thing to decide before looking, "what you want in a dog" or anything for that matter! For more than one reason, I have got into these squirrel dogs again the last 2-3 years and like it. I have found, I should say a buddy of mine, that happened to agree with me on what he wanted in a "squirrel dog" found them, which I knew he would Anyway, decide what you want and go out and see them go/give them a try! You might find something out there you didn't know existed, that's happened to me through the years more than once! Good luck!!!

Laikas

CBG32... About the only thing I would listen to from people that don't have or had laikas and I mean more than 1 laiks, is do ur homework. Like every breed there not perfect and some people are breeding junk. Just like in the curs, fiest and hounds. I've had curs just about all my whole life until I got my first laika 9 yrs ago. The blood I got was from Vladimir and they bark treed since 3-4 month old. The most natural hunting, treeing squirrel dogs I've raised. My laika are hunted with curs and hounds regularly. Hauled in the same boxes all day out with my uncles bear hounds. I've never had a problem with a strange dog. Acually I've had more problems with the cur dogs than laikas. The whole heat problem I can see but I'm in MI so don't worry about it. The cold is why I went to the laika. I was sick of the fiest walking behind me in my tracks in the snow and thin haired cur dogs not taking the cold. I'll be the first to admit they don't look like hunting dogs but they get the job done better than most.

I think the best hunting, treeing laikas I owned came from the Nayda dog that Vladimir had. I think Vladimir has a litter on the ground now. I also think if u can find more laika owners to see their thoughts to get a better idea of these dogs. Instead of the thoughts of people that might have seen 1. Also, laika are a primitive breed, different from the majority of demesticated dogs. In the way they act and hunt is different from the curs and hounds. I would research that along with the bloodlines that fit ur style.

And yes there's some laikas in Missouri and some surrounding states. U just have to look. If u want pm me and I will try to help u.

I really like these West Siberian Laikas. I've only owned one but I've hunted with several others, and they were very impressive dogs. Like everyone else is saying, do your research. You have to want everything that comes with the package for these dogs to work out for you.

Mine started treeing at 4 months and was reliable at a year. He's a decent squirrel dog but prefers raccoon. Squirrels are more of a hobby for him, while the coons are his job. I know a couple guys with some of his siblings and theirs are great on squirrel though.
He's an overall fantastic dog too, the best I've had so far. He's a fast learner and has a really loud bark.

He's out of Vladimir's dogs, the first litter he had with Pavlik and Dinah, and like dirtdodge said, he's got a litter on the ground right now. If they aren't already sold I'd definitely get in contact with him about those pups if you decide you want one.
I know of another litter on the ground out of one of my dog's siblings, but they are in Minnesota.
