We have more than our share of coyotes that inhabit the same areas as rabbits in Indiana. When I train or exercise my beagle to run rabbits out of season, am I legally allowed to carry a shotgun to protect my dog if he should encounter a coyote? My small beagle would be no match for a coyote let alone more than one coyote. I have no intention of killing a rabbit out of season.

COP -----I don't know about a SHOTGUN --I have a CW permit I always carry my handgun --with no problems --good luck with the COYOTES --we have lots of them

You are allowed to carry your CW with permit and carry handgun. Shotgun would be pushing it. They are a real problem. New law on nuisance animals on private property where if the farmer allows you to kill nuisance animals you can kill game out of season. In that situation you could carry a shotgun with landowners permission to take nuisance animals. AS you stated you don't want to shoot rabbits and coyotes are a nuisance. It was on the feist cur pg posted by a CO. He even made a form.

I had an encounter with the game warden here in Ohio. I was caring my pistol and he said I couldn't. But he told me as long as I had my license and carried a blank pistol to shoot over dogs I was legal and could carry my pistol for coyotes. You might want to check with your game warden.

There is a coyote hunting season in Indiana, it's oct 15 2015- March 15, 2016

But we also have an all year round coyote hunting available with written permission on private property only
