Our Last Hunt
I was very fortunate to get the oppurtunity to hunt this week at Southern National Redbone Days is Cedar Grove, NC. On Thursday I got to hunt Trip, the best young dog I've ever owned, and was fortunate to watch him do a really nice job. He split off Pigeon River Gus on the last drop but the tree was hollow. I withdrew him after that as there was no way mathematically he could win. On Friday I hunted my Polly female even though everyone told me not too, because she was pregnant. She treed the only coon seen that night, and needless to say it was very memorable and involved me crossing some very cold water that was over my head. Just like my partner and best friend Deon Collins, we missed the deadline. Deon hunted Slick Thursday and Friday night. Friday Slick scored 562-1/2 + but missed the deadline by 3 minutes. If not for that he could have finished high scoring Redbone. Due to unforeseen circumstances we didn't get to hunt Saturday night, and decided to come home early to our families. I am sad to say to that when we returned home all 3 dogs had died in the box during the ride home. Polly and Slick were 3 years old and Trip was a few months from turning 2. I've been an avid coon hunter for almost 20 years and I have never witnessed anything like this. I am truly scared for life. As a new born believer in Jesus Christ, I have learned to trust in God and put all my faith in him that everything happens for a reason, but I have absolutely no idea why this had to happen or how it happened. I am thankful that I was able to hunt with each of them one last time, but I am mentally, physically, and emotionally scarred for life. Thanks to all my fellow Red Dog hunters for all the support. To Polly, Trip, and Slick, I am so sorry for whatever I did to cause this. I loved you three dogs as much as I loved any other dog I've had in the last 20 years. We will hunt again one day I promise.
