When to stop hunting a bred dog?

How long do you hunt your dogs before you put them up until the pups arrive?

.

I think it comes down to your comfort level and how your female hunts and handles. Any hunt exposes the dam and litter to danger. Exercise is important and an easy hunt shouldn't hurt a thing. I have hunted them in competition 2 weeks before the pups were born with no problems but I knew there was a risk and decided to take it.
I would never recommend another person to risk their hounds well being so the answer is what your comfortable with.

Depends on you really. I have hunted females two weeks prior to giving birth without issue.

On the other hand, I had a semen litter last year out of a Hall of Fame dog and that female wasn't turned loose after she was bred. I hated doing that because she is such a good dog, but I wasn't risking a freak accident happening where I lose her and/or the litter.

How long?

I don't know... I've seen people hunt 'em right up to days before they were due. It's whatever you're comfortable with, for me it would be when I could look at her and see her belly has grown (when she looks like she swallowed a gallon jug, not a five gallon bucket). 😁

back in the early 80"s I know a guy that won the va state championship one Saturday and 7 days later she had pups, and that was before any kind of tracking collars.
