I have a 5 month old walker pup that i just started working with and need some training tips

Let the dog give you the tips. To train a coonhound you have to expose it to a coon. Then depending on the reaction from the dog you pattern your future hunts to fit what he needs. How you expose it to a coon depends on a lot of things you didn't mention. Do you live in the city or middle of the woods. Do you have friends that hunt or don't know any Coonhunters. Can you trap a coon or don't own a trap. If you trapped a coon do you have a place where you can turn it loose for the pup. The mos important thing at your pups age is socialization and basic training to come, lead and behave.

i have a coon caught and i live in the middle of the woods and i dont have any friends that hunt

If you showed the pup the coon does he react to it.

If u live in the woods the best thing u can do is turn the pup loose and let him be!! In 60 days if he has the want to u will have a pup thats running tracks and maybe starting to tree some!! To me their alot more easier to mess with when they want to go hunting than when u take them out and they look up at u like what now?

I normally don't like to mess with one till it's almost a year because if the coon gets ahold of ur pup it may ruin it. Just depends on the durability of the dog. If I'm raising my own I get a little antsy however. At your dogs age I would start simple. Get some lunch meat put it up high enough where they can't reach it. Sit back and wait for him to tree. Sometimes they won't no big deal. U just showed your pup a tree and how to look up. I do this just a couple times. Make him find the lunch meat without seeing it. Next catch a coon in a trap. Don't turn the coon loose where u caught him or even a couple miles away from where u caught him. Tie your pup back take the caged coon 50 yards or so away from your pup. If he barks your in good shape. U only need one tree to make this work. Get u a stick or something turn the coon loose and make it go up that tree. Then turn your pup loose if he was barking at it in the cage he should tree a little on it. Tie him to that tree but I like to have them leash broke first. If they tree on it I'll roll them out but make sure it's dead dead. If its out of season if u think your might be a little gun shy throw some rocks or stick to try to get the coon to move. Good chances are they will bark. Don't show them another caged coon. The next time u do this leave your dog in the box and repeat everything. Hopefully ur pup tracks his way right to the tree and trees it. I do this part in daylight. If he don't tree no big deal. If he does take him home and give table scraps. U showed him alot keep putting them on good hot tracks. Everything should come together for u I hope. I've started a few this way it's the best in my opinion. Easy does it.
