What is a "Redbone coonhound"? Is it just any red colored coonhound? Are Redbones different from walker dogs in any way except for their color. It seems to me that some breeders are breeding for red colored walker dogs. Just what are the traits that set a Redbone apart from a walker dog? I always thought that they were a big deep bawl mouth; accuracy; cold nose; brains/intelligence; easy to train and eager to please their owner; close hunting; excellant disposition and personality. It is no wonder that a lot of walker dog guys are wanting to buy a Redbone now since the Redbones are just becoming red colored walker dogs. Is that what the majority of Redbone people really want?

Several things come to mind when I read this and the first thought was a willy nelson song, he just and old hippy and he dont know what to do should he hang onto the old or should he grab onto the new !!

Then the second was evolution,,,,times are changing,,, the fur market is non existtant.

There is still a lot of pleasure hunters and will always be so there is a place for the old cold nose track dogs, but in todays competition world those dogs cant get it done...

When a houndsmen is paying 600.00 dollar entry fees and an average weekend will cost a 1,000.00 dollars or more then you either have something that can win enough to try to offset some cost or you have really deep pockets and dont mind losing..

But those old cold nose track dogs wont be winning much against the top end competetion dogs of today.

I would say thats why we still have friendly breed hunts so those type of dogs have a chance to compete and win.

One thing about it, we all have choices, and options and I always like options.

So whatever an individual chooses, a cold nose track dog close hunting pleasure dog or a get in the country get hooked type of a winning dog we still have choices....

Wasn't it Hank Jr that sang, "You just leave this long haired country boy alone...".

The times, they are a'changing. Everything is rush, rush, rush these days. No one wants to wait anymore. If a pup isn't treeing by the time he/she is 13 mos old, then they are "worthless" and need culled. When is the last time anyone ever built a fire and sat down to listen to a pack of hounds work a bad track. Coonhunting used to be relaxing. You sat around with your buddies and listened to the dogs work. Nowadays if they aren't treed in 5 minutes, you get rid of them and get a new dog. Now everyone wants to hunt by themselves and turn their dog loose by himself. Coonhunting has become work. There are even handlers now that do it for a living. What ever happened to "pleasure hunting"? I guess that it is just a sign of the times.

Many years ago, I had and hunted 2 older male Redbones at the same time. One had a big beautiful bawl mouth with a foghorn locate and was forevermore a real tree dog. He could fly through the country and you had to catch him off a tree because he had no reverse or quit in him. He was an excellant one way track dog with a real cold nose. He was probably the most stylish hound that I have ever hunted with. The other male chopped on track and chopped on tree and would only occasionally locate. He hunted close and only when he wanted to, not when you wanted him to. He was also very independant and usually by himself unless the other dogs backed him. But he always seemed to know right where a coon was. Many many times he would just wander off and fall treed. He was also one of those "one bark tree dogs". Both dogs were pretty accurate. Now guess which dog won $8,000 in PKC money and which one only won about $1,500. I sure do wish that I had Mongo back to run the hunts with and Little Zack to pleasure hunt and to breed females to.

Close don't work here and would not make for a fun pleasure hunt to me...again, that's here. And me saying that has nothing to do with competition, just my preference. I've had more of those that foundered around than those that rode a jet plane.

I had a good friend always argue about why I wanted one to keep going, he'd say if I walk my dog that same mile and he ends up treeing the same coon yours did off in there a mile, what does it matter? First think how many miles I would waste walking that close hunter a mile for nothing. Second, I want mine to be a fine tuned, tightly woven ATHLETE that does the work first, not second.

Lots and lots of pleasure hunters here want one to come back, I do too, but not for "awhile"...

Anyhow, as mentioned, it's great the redbone breed has choices to suit everyone.

Mongo would tree 2 coons on the way to your dog and neither one of them would "founder around". You would have loved Little Zack but I would have beat you in a hunt with Mongo.

i had redbones sense i was 14 yrs old over a lot of yrs ive seen big changes from those day's to now but due to health problems i couldn't kep up and hunt my young gyp had to let her go so she could be hunted i always a pleasure hunter 100 yrds was plenty for me but this gyp would get out between 3-500 yrds to far for a ole man lol
