Out cross for Smokey River Hounds

I have studied the Smokey River lines since the late 60's.
Smokey River was more of a kennel name until Diamond Jim came along, and that changed everything. The crosses that worked best on Diamond Jim were made to the females out of Earl Hills Ark. Blue. He was mostly Vaughn bred. Mt. Music Blue went back to JV, and Vaughn breeding. I think some of the Smokey River hounds have lost size, and nose, so to put that back in the D.J. line, what would you out cross to??? The crosses that made history were on females from Vaughn breeding, so that is what I am going to do. I managed to get some hounds that are Smokey River, and Vaughn bred. Old Vaughn is hard to find, but a few people have preserved it. When you look at all major strains of blue hounds, if you go back far enough, you can trace them to Vaughn breeding. I have lots of old, old bluebooks, and I have studied the bloodlines for a lone time, esp Smokey River. If you want to produce hounds with nose, voice, looks, size, and heart why not get back to the basics, and go back to the original well??

When you study old bloodlines, remember, you could change a dogs name back then, no matter how many times he/she was bred. You have to look at the reg. numbers because many of the hounds had different names from one set of papers to another, but were actually the same dogs. A lot of people think they are different hounds because they had different names, when in reality they were the same hounds with different names. It has caused a lot of confusion over the years. I am glad UKC will not allow a name change once a dog has been bred. This policy change eliminates any confusion.

S.R. x Vaughn:

I believe that's a good way to go. Buzz Anderson and Guy Orminston recommended this to me in the winter of '01. I really like Buzz Anderson x S.R. Chief's Dancer lines. If you hide hunt you will like them. They do good on bear also. If you competition hunt, you may not like them. Those I have hunted with were open mouth, cold nosed, good hunters and strike dogs. They have loud mouths and are good natured and some of them were sit-down tree dogs. They also showed a lot of determination to catch game. Where I live and hunt, coon aren't plentiful and these hounds work well for me. Go for it Mr.Edwards !

Congratulations!!!!!! You have done good with the blue dogs!!!!! You have come a long ways in the blue world since the walkers you were hunting when I first met you, and they were nice. ha ha!!!!!! I wish you nothing but continued success in your breeding and hunting. I've got Henry here, out of Racket Ridge Slim, if you ever want to breed to him. Won't cost you a penny, and he has reproduced some top dogs out of different females. I know you have access to some top hounds, but if you ever need him, you are more than welcome to use him.

That's the truth. I had the opportunity to talk with him days before he died. It shocked everyone when he passed away. The old Vaughn blood is hard to find, but a few men have kept it around.

Id love to hear who it is, I live five miles from his homeplace, and visited many times with my grandpa, he frequently hunted with us, I know a little about his breedings, dogs, and people who ended up with any of it, send me a pm, Id love to hear of some new stock.
