I hunted Cody and with Cody a lot .I bred a ntch female to him and harry .the pups I raised made good dogs but we're always bumping off game and would run it if another dog put in with them.that's the biggest problem I had with them .the good is they had plenty of drive and hunt to them .over all independant with good mouths and not mean.my stud chntch PR keefs hardwood James Willard has Cody blood in his ped.

Jar Kennel or Alex Combs

Kevin Butner and Justin Harris. Mason Jar and Brawler.

Alex Combs has Eddie and old Harry.

I've got a NtCh female double Jar bred. Hunted with Cody nearly all his life, know Henry and Gary Melton very well. Had him at my house for 10 1/2 months. Most are big hunters, good to above average mouth and track speed. Some can be trashy, and can be hard to break. If you get the right one they are powerful! Freddy is awesome, as much like old Jar as I've ever seen. He even sounds like him and locates like him. Jar had a longer bawl on track then Freddy. Freddy is a classier tree dog, but not any harder of a tree dog! Jar had awesome track speed and killer locate as well as accurate! Seen him do some great work. I was on the cast Saturday night at English Day's in OH when he scored 1450+ no minus and was hunting against Diesel and Fayard's Lemon dog too.....they withdrew! Seen him tree 4 coon and a den while 2 other pretty good dogs made one den, same night treed 3 coon in 15 mins...I timed him on several drops.

Thanks ,Yeah im sorry i shoulda said besides Freddy ..... Ive been kicking around/researching about breeding to Freddy for some time now and leaning very heavy that way to be honest. Yeah Freddy has dotsons hardtime cody on bottom along with Swamprooster AND Wilcox J.R and Ol junior on top. The thing that has drawn my attention to the Jar dogs is the Track Power !!!
Ive got a good friend who hunted with ol jar as a young boy and he said he was "one" of the best dogs ever slip his head thru a collar and he's a walker man. Travis - funny you mention what you have cause my buddy said he dont ever remember walking to jar that he didnt have a coon!

Curious if there was .... any other tight bred studs ?
Thanks Gentlemen !

As far as stud dogs, mason jar has the most cody jar blood u can get. There are several dogs like freddy that are doubled on Dotsons cody, but mason is doubled on jar. Mason is the youngest Grnitech male left out of jar. Mason is also throwing great pups! I have them to prove it. If anyone is interested in mason jar Id be glad to show a 2 year old out of him, or a 9 month old male out of him. As well as mason himself.

Jar

The only time I ever hunted with him was when I guided him at English days when he scored the 1450 plus Travis is talking about and I'll have to say he put on a " coon treeing clinic " that night that was pretty impressive!!

I think it's safe to say I've probably hunted with or owned as many jar hounds as anyone other than Henry Melton himself. From my experience of hunting jar hounds and Henrys advice I would say one of the best qualities of these dogs is there natural ability. I could go on an on about how different crosses worked an so forth. If theres anything way I can help feel free to give me a call. Good luck!

I would be real interested in hearing more about this. What blood or strain of dogs did you think crossed the best on old Jar?

Never hunted with Cody Jar but I have hunted with more than a few pups and grand pups.. All were tree dogs.. Some were just pleasure dogs some were competition quality that never got competition hunted.. We had a lot of 5-10 minute hunts and have a coon.. Most were above average accurate.. We never had any problems with them being trashy, but we never had them around any dogs that were trashy so don't know anything about that part of it..

I have not hunted coon in a few years but I was with Timothy Nolan when we went to Henrys and bred Katie to Cody Jar.. Timothy asked who I would breed to as he had some stud in mind, ad knowing what the Cody Jar dogs were doing thats what I suggested. Thats where Mason Jar come from if I remember correctly.

In fact if things go well we are supposed to go get a full sister to Mason Jar very soon..

I hunted a lot with Cody Jar when Bobby Northcutt hunted and promoted Cody for Henry Melton. I have hunted many of young dogs direct from Cody Jar. The best thing I remember well was being ACCURATE, GO HUNTING, and TRACK DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cody could run a coon track like most dogs that know how to run deer. Cody could tree as hard as most dogs and him digging at the bottom of the tree (in soft ground). I NEVER had a pup off Cody Jar that would dig at the tree. THIS WAS ONE SPECIAL HOUND. I hunted with Cody when he was two and three years old. I offered Henry a good price for him back in that day, offered to even buy half ownership. Mr. Henry had one hell of a dog in "CODY JAR". Just my opinion, and sticking to it! I forgot to mention he had a real mouth and the majority of his pups had real nice mouths.
