Back when I was in high school I coon hunted every night, I mean literally every night that I could possibly go. My buddies and I would hunt til daylight, get home and take a shower, go to school, and do it all over again the next night. I'm not sure how I survived those years but it was some of the best times of my life. Girls, college, and work finally got in the way and I stopped hunting. The last two dogs I had back then were red females and they were COONDOGS. They'd kick dirt up in your face when cut loose and you'd pull them off a tree somewhere. I wish I still had their papers or could remember what they were out of. After being out of the sport for over 20 years, I got back into it back in the spring of this year and naturally I wanted a red dog. I acquired a male dog, pedigree below, and have since hunted every night possible. He just turned 3 and I've treed alot of coons with him. The only complaint I have with him is that occasionally he's a little slow to go hunting when turned loose. Not always, and not that often but I don't like it when he does do it. Never had him make a bark on anything off, handles good, minds good, responds to the tone button like he's on rails, sounds like a freight train on the track and has a loud chop on tree. He's got so much determination on a track/tree that it's almost got him killed a couple times but I would like some suggestions on how or if I can correct the one complaint I have with him. I'm also wanting to find a good red female to add to my kennel and I want one that hits the woods at a dead run when I cut her and wondered what blood lines I should look at? If he only does it now and then, I would be happy with it. Just because a hound kicks dirt in your eyes getting gone don't mean he is hunting, only that he takes out quick. You can make a dog get gone quick to get away from you. But, you can't make him hunt.
He sounds like a nice hound. Keep him in the brush.

No matter what hound you have, none are 100% perfect in every single area! When I think of my best hound I've had, I can think of a few things that I would have changed If I could... But I still wouldn't trade them for any 10 other hounds!
Your redbone sounds like he is a good one! Good to see you are back in the timber- I can't imagine being gone for 20 yrs!

One man's complaint or fault is another man's good point. I like a dog that starts hunting as soon as you turn him loose and doesn't go flying off 300 yds before he ever starts trying to trail/hunt. I don't like a dog that goes racing off and doesn't slow down enough to find a coon until he is 300-400 yds from you. I have wondered whatever happened to the pups from Bryan's litter. I think that there were only 3 that made it. Does Bryan still have one?

Thought I would just mention this, I have seen dogs energy levels change drastically when feeding different food. Dogs are like people if they don't feel like they have enough energy they don't feel like hunting. nutrition can make a dog somewhat lazy at times. I have also seen dogs that when taken to a competition hunt they rise to a entire new level but when pleasure hunted they seem to hunt closer and slower. Dogs can read our anxiety levels and they hunt harder when they sense the difference in the way their handler acts.

It could be that your dog is a 3 night a week dog not a 5 night a week . That is how some are also. Conditioning can help with that.

Just some things to think about, sounds like a good dog to me. Good luck with your Red dog.

Richard, I ran into Bryan about a month ago and he was leading a Walker dog.I couldn't believe it.He said the Walker dog was nice.I said it must be if you a leading it and not a red dog.

Thanks guys. I didn't mean to sound like I was unhappy with my hound, I'm actually really pleased with him overall. I was just saying if there's one thing I could change about him, that would be it. As far as the feed, I hadn't really thought about that. I feed Sportmix 24/20. He seems to do well on it but if there's a feed that's better I want to try it. What do you guys feed?

As for Bryan having any dogs out of this litter, I don't know. I don't know Bryan, I got this dog from a friend of mine here that's been in the red dog business for close to 30 years.

I use to not feed my dogs during the day when I planned to that night. I feed them after I got through hunting that night. I was told buy an OLD hand, that a hungry dog hunted harder than one with a full belly.
Keep us posted on your progress. I have a young dog now that is really nice. But she don't hunt to suite me. Our coons are thin here. If she was in thick coons. She would be fine.

Richard, I haven't comp hunted in over 20 years. I've been thinking about getting back into it but I don't even know where to do it around here anymore. We use to have a club here that sponsored UKC hunts but it's long gone. None of my old huntin buddies comp hunt anymore.
