Developing a Training Program
Guys I am picking up a new pup in a week from Randy Smith and Lone Pine Kennels.
With this pup I would like to develop a Training Program. Which I believe will help hold me accountable to the work that is required with any new pup as well as help assess the pups progress. I'm not a professional trainer but I thought with your help we would be able to develop a general program. When it's all said and done. I hope we will have a written training program and guideline that in the future we could share with our new hunters and trainers.
I assume the easiest way to do this will be in phases which then would be broke down into into 4 week increments.
Socialization Period
Weeks 8 through 12
The goal of the Socialization Period is to make a smooth transition from his previous pack to new his home. He will also be introduced into a new routine consisting of sleeping eating and playing. Through good supervision and quick but light corrections and different feeding exercises. Our goal is by week 12 he will know how to respect humans as well as fellow dogs. Our main focus will be good manners and setting a good foundation for our future training.
Weeks 8 and 9
........1. Introduction to kennel, home, and pack members.
........2. Lots of playtime, with the purpose of observing temperament and socialization.
........3. Starting the conditioning to physical corrections and word association for verbal commands no and quiet.
........4. Beginning the corrections of any poor puppy behavior, biting, food aggression.
........5. Introduction to the normal routine, feeding times, sleeping times, play times.
Weeks 10-12
.....1. Introduction to a regular lead.
.....2. Continuation of all previous steps.
.....3. The starting of feeding exercises and basic commands.
.....4 Kennel
...............a Using a reward system, teach dog to kennel on his own free will.
......5 respect
...............a. By feeding the oldest dog in the pack first and down on the line, this help enforces our pups place in the pack as well helps him control his drive.
.....6 Off
.................a aka NO,Down, and or "leave it alone" a simple verbal correction
.....7 Manners
................a. Supervised playtimes No barking, overly aggressive growling,or stealing of toys.
By combing the above lessons by now we should have a well mannered pup that is on a schedule, accepted into the pack and a good basis of communication.
Phase 2 Obedience
Weeks 13 through 20
Our goal here is do a quick pre hunt obedience course.
Combined with some positive imprinting.
I'm not to worried about developing the drive for hunting because if he has it, it will still be there when its time.
We want a pup to take to the woods that leads, loads, is comfortable being in the woods, and the dark, is comfortable riding in the box, respect for others and is eager to work/enjoys working.
Weeks 13 and 14
.....1. Feeding Exercises
..........A. Force pup to sit and wait for food. Starting with short waiting times and increasing waiting times in small increments.
..........b. continuation of previous feeding exercise as well
.....2. Leading Exercises
..........A. Introductions to the lead, regular walks on the lead in the heel position.
