Pup treeing possum question?

I brought my 5 1/2 months old pup with me tonight. My old dog and another year old dog i have took off down the holler. My 5 1/2 month old fell to the left and sit down and started treeing. Sure enough she tree a possum in a tree about 8 foot tall, she could see it. Just wondering what others would do and this situation, decipline her or pet her up. Thanks

I would do neither of the two options you suggested. I would simply walk in, leash her up, and move on in the direction of the other dogs. She (in my opinion) is too young to start disciplining for off game. Be thankful she has enough tree dog in her to drop off by herself and start treeing.

Good advice! I did the same with my bluetick pup and I had great results.

The first one they get a pass on....

The second one gets a lil keen switching and scolding, if they continue each time the punishment goes up a level.

What if the same dog hits the trifecta with 3 in a row? What's the punishment for that? LMAO !!!!!!

What is the punishment for the handler who keeps treeing them?

This really depends on the pup im hunting ive been hunting a line of dogs for awhile that can get extremely bad on opposums so i break them the first time they do it being its 2 months old or a year old dont matter to me!! Now for the most part ive seen that a 5 month old pup treeing a opposum isnt a big deal and i wouldnt do much of nothin maybe jerk him off and lead him away!! But the line ive been hunting that isnt enough

I think you saw the punishment for three in a row...

And that fourth one he never even barked at.

I will say has I owned all of him I would have gotten after him harder the first time.

X2
Way to young to disciplin,,and never pet her up on off game,,do that and off game will become a much bigger problem.
Just leash her and walk her off and move on.

I would love too see my 5 1/2 month pup tree a possum! You want a gamey pup, you can break them later! More coons thay tree, the less possums you'll see.

My husband sent 3 possums and 34 coon to North.American Fur Assoc last yr. The possums sold; they still have most the coon...maybe a possum dog isn't such a bad thing.

A friend of mine had around 20 something possum hides and tried to sale them and the most he was offered was 25 cents a hide, i would not skin and sale a green hide of any kind for that kind of money.

He caught the possums in his bobcat sets...he doesn't like killing anything and just throwing it away. I think he got $1.25 for 1 and 75 cents fot the other 2. He's retired...it gives him something to do. Most of the coon we got with Ruby.

If it's a Black and Tan, don't worry, it probably won't happen again until you are in the finals of a world hunt.

If I had a 5 1/2 month old pup tree a possum I would try to get it off tree and lead it away without any punishment or praise. Truthfully though, I would have a hard time not pettin it up just a little bit and feelin like I had somethin to smile about! LOL. I don't wanna see possums no more than anybody else but if a pup that young trees it, that's ok with me.
