boots

I have always worn boots and chaps, froglegs. i have 3 pair and each have developed leaks and tears. As the weather gets colder this becomes more of a problem. So the last couple of weeks I been wearing snake boots and nylon bibs. It is a lot more comfortable but I know Im going to end up in a swamp wishing I had my chaps back. Got to thinking how many folks hunt in just boots and how many wear chaps/boots. I know it will be regionally related but I was curious nonetheless.

.

I have tried it many times because just boots are a lot easier on an older fellow. Generally you have to learn to hunt with wet feet when you leave the chaps behind.

You are 100% right about this being a regional issue. Hunters in the south can prob get by with just boots. No Way i could in Mn. Tuesday night I was breaking ice as I waded through thigh deep water getting across a slough to an island where the dog had treed. I hate to think about what would have happened if I didn't have boots/chaps on. Now once it freezes up to where the ice is a safe thickness the only use for the chaps is to deflect the brush. So maybe both ways would be useful here.

.

I actually tried to develop a 8 inch wide nylon band that had elastic on the top and bottom to keep the water out of your boot. I slid it on at the top of the boot and tried to make that work but but it didn't.
I then had a super mini chap about 8 inches sewed to the top of the boot with elastic around the top of it. I had a hard time getting it tight enough to seal without cutting off the circulation on my leg.
To make a long story short I had such a hard time getting something made that fit me, I felt it would be impossible to make it and have it work for people with all different leg sizes.

I don't know what part of the south you hunted in, but it wasn't south Louisiana. I wear Lacrosse Big Chief hip boots year round and plenty times they're not tall enough.

Bruce, Duct Tape works pretty good. Carry some in your pocket and use it when/if you hit a swamp.
"You might be a Redneck if your boots are duct taped on".
