Fellas, I have female who for the most part is a pretty nice hound. She is a fairly accurate dog but, you never know if it will be a coon or possum. I have tried all the typical breaking techniques. Whooped, killed possum and whooped her with, shook possum out of tree caught it and whooped her with it, etc... Any home remedies? I need something this is the main reason she is not grand now. Thank you for your advice a head of time.

When you tree a poss shoot it out as soon as she puts her mouth on it shocker her on 6 bout two or three times of that usually solves the problem this has worked for me

I have heard several people say that while they were out hunting they picked up a fresh road killed possum and threw it in the dog box with the dog and shocked the dog as they drove on down the road. I have never tried that myself. I prefer to break the dog on possum away from a tree on the ground. Either catch them in the act of catching one on the ground or set the dog up with a dead possum. Let your dog go in and tree a coon and have a dead possum laying somewhere where you will be walking by it on the way back to the truck. When the dog starts smelling after the possum don't say a work and put the juice to the dog. That has worked for me.

Set a trap and catch one. Turn it loose through a field or good open area then wait just long enough for it to be outta sight and cut her loose once she hits the track shock the sh!t outta her. This method has always worked for me if you break them from tracking it any dog with a brain will stop treeimg them

I put shocking collars on my dog to keep them from barking in the pen at night. After shocking them several time for barking a possums around the pen, they have completely stopped. I now have three different possums that get in the dog pen to eat dog food. Not saying this will work for you, but I never thought it was possible for a possum to survive in the pen with my Gus dog.

I didn't invent this another hunter gave me the idea and it worked great for me . I had one that was doing the same .

When she treed possum I pulled her off the tree , put her in the dog box . Went back to the tree and shot the the possum . I took the possum and laid it on a trail I could see all the way down. I turned the dog out on the trail , she headed straight to it . I watched her and as soon as she got to it put the electricity on her . worked for this dog and I didn't have to punish her at the tree . Works better if you have two hunters , one to handle the possum away from the dog.

I've had several possum getters in my day. I've walked clear to the top of a mountain to pick a dog off a possum. I've heard and tried most remedies. The modern day shocker is the best invention sense sliced bread, LOL. Believe it or not, I have shocked dogs right off the side of a tree with a possum in it. If you have a true tree dog, it will take more than that to break them from treeing. Shocking a dog inside the box could make them box shy as well. Course your prolly thinking better box shy than tree shy and you have a good gripe! Like all the others said, I would try shocking the living daylights out of them away from the tree and if it bothers you that much, put that possum down at the tree and light em up when they grab it. Don't play games, give them the full extent of your shocker, you don't want to have do it too many times. Each dog is different so know their limitations.

Everyone obviously has their favorite method and philosophy.

I'm sure all methods work with some dogs. Here my two penny's. Why risk whether or not it will Ruin a dog from treeing by shocking/whipping at the tree? Yes there are some if not a lot, that method would not effect, but every dog is different and all will have different thoughts going through their head when being corrected at the tree for the first time. I don't want mine thinking its him treeing thAts doing it.

I have fixed every hound I had a problem with, the following way. Not saying it's the right way but I won't do It any different. .

Trap a possum, take the opossum out of the trap and tether it to a stake. ( I use thin wire and rebar so it would walk natural and the dog would not associate the cage as the negative). I then leave it there for a few hours to let my scent trail dissipate.
Next take your dog for a walk on the lead for a short while (staying positive). Durring your nice joyful walk, walk him/her towards the tethered opossum till the dog smells/notices it.as soon as it notices the opossum, at a high level, use Continuas stimulation while continuing walking towards it. Stay nuteral and don't verbally Correct the dog.( the key it to make the dog think it's the opossum hurting him). The dog will try dragging you away and let him. Once you are a ways away from the opossum release the stimulation. Continue walking around with him for a while and during the course walk it by the opossum again the dog will notice it again and repeat the process.
As you walk around the third, fourth time etc. ( usually only takes three), the dog will start trying to drag you away prior to getting close. Once he is doing everything he can to drag me away prior to getting close to the opossum, I usually try pulling the dog close to the opossum( staying positive saying things like come on boy lets go etc ) and shock the dog one more time.

Once the dog has the ideas opossums are pure evil put the dog up for a day or so and let it all sink in. Then go hunting.

I have a 8 year old male that to this day if he walks across a fresh opossum Trail he start back tracking to go around it.

Again not saying it's the right way but it has worked great for me and I feel it will have the least amount of negatives compared to the old(Er) methods.

A couple of older gentlemen at my club suggested whipping the dog with the opossum and then tying that sucker to its collar to where it drags it around 2 where ever it goes. Making sure that it always has some for of weight pulling on the dogs neck. Then they suggested letting it stay on there for a week or 2. I would have never thought it would work, but has by far had the best results for me.

She is confused. Shooting a coon out to her has been her ultimate reward. thus shooting the opossum out to her (giving her an ultimate reward) and then scolding her with it is backwards training. The scolding has happened after the fact. She has no idea what she is doing wrong is all.

Shes going to be a very nice hound. Call me and I'll see if I can help , I think I have a couple pointers that will get you in the right direction!! in one week you'll be hunting your thickest possum woods and only be seeing coon in the tree guaranteed !!

Shooting the possum out is a bad idea, in my opinion, even if you shock her till she pees herself.

You want to break her from trailing and treeing them, not from biting them once they hit the ground.

Remember--the dog you think is so smart will eat crap and roll in dead cows.

They don't make the connection and if you shoot it out, you have rewarded them.

Turning loose on fresh possum tracks and shocking them off it, or shocking them off a tree is the only thing I have seen work.

Personally, if they quit treeing altogether, I don't figure they had sense enough to make a coon dog.

I have no use for a dog that trees possums.

Coon are too thin where I live and the country is too rough.

I'm not going to walk these old rough hills for half a mile to a possum.

I start wanting to smell dead dog.

It makes no sense to shoot out a possum while trying to break a dog of treeing them! John Carroll is exactly right with EVERYTHING HE SAID!

I wouldn't go out of my way to trap one either. Just run a shock collar on the dog every time you hunt. Shine the tree as you are walking in. as soon as you see the possum, walk away, turn off your light, and shock the dog. Do this a few times and the dog will realize that treeing possums isn't NEARLY as fun as treeing coons!


A dog knows the difference between the scent of a coon and a possum!!
