I havent had my young hound out for very much of the summer, and over the last week, ive had him out 4 times and I've noticed that hes doing something new, leaving the tree after a couple minutes.

He about 1.5 years old and he never had that behavior previously. I have never knocked one down to him yet (gun season still over 3 weeks away)

He is doing excellent, cut him loose, hes silent, then strikes on track then he is kind of chopping until he gets to a tree and bawls. Unmistakable when he trees. Last couple days though, I havent been able to get to the tree for several min. ( 4-5 minutes tops), and by then I can see him at the tree, and he will leave it. I can then check the tree and sure enough theres coon.

I haven't been able to get there in time to praise him, (if i should) and I havent knocked one down. Is that all it will take to keep him treed? Hes not running to me when I show up, its more like I show up and he goes hunting again.

go get him bring him back to the tree pet him up and start giving him some coon, ( I do not know why anyone would hunt a young dog that is treeing coon and not give it some coon )

We have a hard nosed Game Warden that lives local and I have been specifically told by several people not to shoot coon out of season here.

Try to stay closer to him and get to the tree quick. If need be run him down and take him back to the tree and hype him up on the tree. Pet him good when he trees, this should get back on the tree without a coon.

If you are not going to shoot a couple coons out, just wait until kill season opens and then start back hunting him.I have always believed in rewarding a young dog for doing good work.Good luck, Jr.Steelman

Skip's right, they gotta have some coons...I aint sayin' break the law, but I aint seen a game warden yet that would much get out of the car, let alone come in the woods...at night.
You might want to check with some of the game laws in your state too. Most states have something that says you can kill them if they are damaging livestock or personal property. Here in my communist democrat state you can kill a coon anytime as long as he's damaging a muskrat hutch or bothering livestock. Coon season never closes for some of these local hillbillies.

Wait until the kill season starts then take him with a solid hound. Let them both tree then come into the tree tie that solid hound at the tree then go run him down shine the tree and see about where the coon will hit the ground then tie him about 10 yards from that spot .Shoot the coon let the solid hound have it,not the pup. If you don't mind shooting more than one a night then do it all over exept tie him a little bit forther back. I did this to a pup that would beat his mother to the tree,tree about two minites and leave.I tied him back three times in one night and did not let him have any part of the dead coon.After that I've seen him hold a tree for a good four hours until I could get to the tree.

I would first train him to come on command. Why chase him down when you can get him to every tree in seconds.
