2.5 cups of purina Proplan Sport 30/20 with a big scoop of k9 superfuel when we get back in from hunting.
I will also give him two cups in the morning about once a week just to make sure he don't get to worn down.

They will be in great shape when your just hunting one dog.

Diamond Extreme athlete and the other diamond naturals are decent feeds but I have never seen Diamond at very many hound events.

You should get very few responses to this one.

From a guy that hunts around 5 or 6 nights and maybe 18 - 20 hours per week, 6 cups of Diamond AE and one 15 ounce can of mackeral per day.

Loaded?

How do you feed family and pay the Piper hunting every night. Meat scraps with your choice dog food.

Put him on diamond extreme athlete and buy superfuel and put a scoop plus on his food every evening !! If you feed after hunting or in morning if that's when you feed and he will look like a body builder within a few weeks and sure won't look run down nor will he hunt like it either !!! 571-233-5819 Callme Ifyou haveany questions bryan I give mine one cup of ea unless it's extremely cold then maybe 1.5 cups and they sure aren't thin !!! 5/6 cups is a waist and from what I have seen with that much ea I bet there stool looks like a cow patty !! You won't believe how much less of ea you will have to feed to get the same results of other foods and if you give them just a tad to much there stool will loosen when the amount if rite you will have one a day if you don't hunt them 0 pile if you do and you can step on it and it will fall apart like dirt !! Good stuff not cheap but worth the $$$$

Make sure your adding water to his feed, this will help with hydration. I feed more, add dinner scraps, hotdogs, eggs, protein fatty stuff. Dog sled guys add chicken fat, venison, elk, various, that sorta stuff.

Jim why did you go with the can of mackeral?
I have a buddy who bow fishes a lot and Ive gone with him a few times and often wondered why I'm not feedin the barrels of carp we throw away at the end of the night

I'm feeding Pride 26/20, 1 scoop of k9 superfuel, and a few times a week a spoon full of bacon grease and a duck egg

He looks great weight and build I'm not worried about, He was going on his 5th hour lastnight and looked sluggish, it was warm and he had already treed 3 singles and the last track was long, maybe Im expecting to much, but when a dog rarely misses I cant help but hunt the hair off him

Its foggy real bad tonight and usually that don't stop me but I think he needs a night off

I may switch feed, Ive never had a dog I enjoyed hunting so much so I never had a problem with pride if that even is the problem, I can get it 5 minutes from the house and everything else is half hour away, Im hoping they get the new 30/20 mixture soon

Their not machines I realize that just wondering if theres something I can change so he never runs out of energy...haha that sounds bad

I add venison and a lot of fatty stuff as well, I don't water feed cause I have my dogs on self feeders but the superfuel I mix with a bowl full of water and he gulps that down everynight, Hes a very easy keeper doesn't eat a lot or drink a lot never looks or acts like he needs more food or water, any scraps I feedem I add water, I love the holidays cause I take home all the leftovers I can get from the relatives!

I would say expectations. U can burn some dogs out. Just depends on the dog. Dogs get stiff and sore just like we do.

Certain fish oils are really good for dogs...some fish are naturally oily, but I am pretty sure carp do not have any of the good oils dogs need. I add a tablespoon of fish oil to their food every other day. I also add bacon or sausage grease when I have it. Other than that I just give them good quality feed. I have always had good luck with Purina.
This isn't diet, but it does have to do with how much energy a dog burns just staying warm or reserves for when he needs it in the woods...it gets cold enough up your way that a working dog needs a good quality insulated dog house that is sized right to fit him. A dog can burn a lot of calories staying warm in the kennel when he is not being hunted, especially if his house is too big for his own body heat to warm or there is no insulation to help him out. Plenty of straw bedding and a good sealed up box with no drafts is pretty important when it really gets cold.

I wouldnt know how a older dog does on it but all the young dogs stay in good shape and never ran down. During the summer months i just fed the diamond hi energy to the eagle dog and i hunted him 7 nights a week for about 3 months straight 4 to 5 hours a night and he would gutt u trien to follow him. But in the winter i like to feed a lil high protein so i mix it all up. I dont know im not a big food guru or vitaman type guy i just feed em what they like and i feed mine 2 qts after hunting some say thats too much but mine get hunted pretty hard and some dogs will get too fat feeding that ammount so i just keep a eye on the dog and judge it from that

I dont hunt every night but I do buy Purina Pro Plan and cut it with Green Bag Diamond to get 77.5 lbs of food. Thats about .79 cents a Lb. Dogs stay slick and you dont have to feed them a bucket to keep them in good shape.

Anybody ever try feeding in the middle of a long hunt. When I had bird dogs, I would give them a can of Alpo at lunch time. It sure gave them a boost for the afternoon hunt.

Well, I have, but it didn't make much difference.....some say it's not recommended. When I asked my vet about it she said, "You want the food your dog has ate to already be digested so it does him some good when he's hunting." This takes time. Also, there is always a risk of twisting a gut or "stomach flipping over" as it's referred to when you feed then hunt right away.
I believe if you intend to hunt at dark you want to feed in the early afternoon. Sometimes if it is really cold I give them a little {1/2cup} when we are done. Dogs actually burn some calories while digesting food, so it can make them a little tired and they are not using their extra energy staying warm or performing.
I would say that if you do feed in the middle of a long hunt make sure it is wet canned food, not dry.
