Bruce,
I don't think you have ever shared that story before. It is a good story. The thing is if you thought a possum was pretty ya had something working against right from the beginning.lol
My story:
No genetics here. None of my family were coon hunters. I remember seeing hounds on tv, and remembering that I wanted one really bad. I had several mutts as a kid. All I picked out because I thought each looked like a hound. Funny part is every single mutt would hunt rabbit, squirrels, possums and woodchucks. The clincher for me was Where a Red Fern Grows.
My first hunts started in 1973 with the husband of one of my mom's friends from work. His name was Orrie. His idea of coon hunting was stop and get a six-pack of Pabst Blue-Ribbon Tall Boys. We would cut the dogs loose. He would drink and fall asleep. I would wake him, and tell him that the dogs were treed. He would say they are in a deep swamp it isn't safe to go in there. He would sleep until dawn, and we would go home. The first 2 years of hunting I never seen a dog standing on a tree.
It wasn't until I meet my mentor Mac that I seen a dog treed with a coon. I wasn't old enough to drive yet, by the time I bought my first dog. I hunted every weekend dragging my poor father along, and i completely broke him of coon hunting. Two years and all we treed was 1 possum, and trust me I wasn't happy with it. My father never straight forward said it, but I believe he thought I was nuts.lol
It has been a very long road until I actually bought my first walker puppy in 1983, and he thought me more about coon hunting than any person. The night he died a part of me died too. The morning I buried him I pledged to keep his line in my kennel as long as I hunted. I am not going to say keeping that pledge has been easy, but I can say i have never regretted it.
