Activity of ivermectin against canine intestinal helminths
Am J Vet Res. September 1982;43(9):1681-3.
D L Anderson; E L Roberson
Article Abstract
The anthelmintic activity of ivermectin was tested in 98 dogs against adult ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A braziliense), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and against experimentally induced infections (4th-stage larvae) of T canis and A caninum. Dosage levels tested were single subcutaneous injections of 50, 100, 200, or 400 micrograms/kg of body weight with appropriate vehicle-treated controls. A minimum of 4 (usually 5) dogs were tested with each parasite and dosage level. The lowest dosage level, 50 micrograms/kg, and all higher dosage levels expelled greater than 99% of the adult forms of both species of hookworms and intestinal larval forms of A caninum, as determined by worm counts at necropsy. A dosage level of 100 micrograms/kg was required to expel greater than 99% of whipworms and 200 micrograms/kg was necessary to expel adult (91%) and larval (97%) stages of T canis. Ivermectin was only marginally effective (34.2%, 46.2%, 69.2%, and 53.8%) against Toxascaris leonina at 50, 100, 200, and 400 micrograms/kg, respectively, and had no effect against occasional infections with the tapeworms, Dipylidium caninum (14 dogs) and Taenia spp (3 dogs).
The dose for dogs varies from .006 mg/kg for heartworm prevention only up to 0.6 mg/kg for roundworms and demodex mange. If you use a dose of 0.4 mg/kg for internal parasites including heartworms, hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms you will be using a dose that is 2x that of horse dosing which is 0.2 mg/kg. So you would need to take the dogs weight and multiply it by 2 and then set your dial on that weight , squirt it onto a piece of bread and give it orally.
Example : 100 pound dog x 2 = 200. Set syringe at 200# and give orally.
50 pound dog x 2 = 100 pound dose. Set your syringe for 100# and give that dose.
10 pound dog x 2 = 20. This would be a difficult weight to dose using paste and I'd recommend using the 1% liquid at .1cc per 10#.
If you just want heartworm prevention dose it would be really hard to calculate using the paste because it would require diluting the paste in water and then pulling up in a small syringe.
Do not give this to Collie related breeds, or any cattle dog with white feet in their breed, known to carry the MDR-1 gene.
Much easier to use the liquid Ivermectin 1% in dogs at a dose of 0.1cc per 10 pounds of weight for the parasites above. Despite false claims of this leading to kidney or liver problems in dogs, there is no evidence that once monthly administration to dogs leads to any long term problems. We commonly dose it at this high level daily for 2-4 months for treating Demodex Mange with no effects on these organs. It can cause short term tremors and seizures at these high doses however so don't use these doses in dogs with known seizure problems or Ivermectin sensitivity. This is all extra label use of the drug.
