which style are you ?

I'm noticing something with coon hunting the last 5 or 6 years that's getting more and more and more common. Coon hunting is a setup where one guy owns the dogs ( usually many dogs) and he doesn't even actually coon hunt at all . This guy is the owner and sponser and he pays for everything, entry fees, dog food, boots , lights , everything. Then he has guys that actually take the dogs hunting for him. These guys do not own the dogs. They just hunt the dogs. I wonder if folks like me that just own one or two dogs and hunt them themselves is becoming the minority ? Which category are you ?

I keep 1 dog of my own and the rest belong to other people. I keep no more than
4 dogs at a time. I usually keep one from super stakes till super stakes that belong to somebody that pays the way. Monthly fee, gas, entry, hotel would like to find that 1guy with 2-3 nice dogs that wants to hit the road. I do this cause running up and down the road cost money weather your winning or loosening.

I own Treeing Curs which I coon and squirrel hunt with. But I have had the pleasure of handling some nice dogs for some guys over the last few years. I am probably the get them tuned up and get a few cast wins type of handler. I love getting a dog clicking. Mr. Tim Osborne is a jam up guy to handle for.

I have been paid to run up and down the road and hunt other peoples dogs. They provided everything but it just didn't do much for me. I haven't done it in several years. I own and hunt my own stuff now, but no Jason we are not even close to the minority and it isn't a new fad. Its been that way since I started in the hunts in the 80's a little more prevalent now but its always been happening.

Jason, who do you know that owns dogs, hires handlers and doesn't hunt at all? Name someone. Bet you can't.

I know some who because of age or disability cant follow them anymore but they cant help that. I use to hunt for Buddy Gilbert many years ago. Buddy loved it as much or more than anyone. He just couldn't walk in the woods anymore.

Ive never done the partnership owner thing either. How do yall deal with problems and issues that come up ? No way they can agree on everything and are friendships lost over it ?

A partnership should always be 49/51% never partner with anyone that can't separate business from friendship, just stay friends and go hunting.

Its always been like that for some people Jason. It hasnt changed and if you are in it for fun then just keeping doing it that way and it never will change for you.

If it was about business for me I would have took the offer that was made on my gyp the other day. When it stops being about having a good time I will stop doing it.

I bet I can but he may go sometimes to listen. I own all mine Jason. I am in partners on bear killer and was partners with same guy on the harry semen dog I had a couple yrs ago. Way it is. He bought em. I feed em and hunt em and treat them as mine. I wanna whoop one or whatever. I do it. I hunt one in a hunt. I pay and I keep winnings. However I want to send this half breed somewhere to have the hair hunted off him and coons knocked out to him this fall for about 2 months and Im hoping he will pay one and me pay one.

I will send a dog back to the owner before i let it ruin a friendship. But if you both enjoy hunting (I really enjoy hunting a nice hound) then keeping a dog hunted up and really getting them going for someone is fun for me. To look back at a dog that has been finished out, won a few hunts and knowing you had a part in getting the dog there is so much enjoyment.

I guess I fall under both.... The way we do it is if the dog is at your place you pay for any bills that may arise. If we breed a female whoever raises the pups keeps what money they may make off them.

Right now my Pride dog is in Ohio at Mike Blackburn's I told him any female he bred to Pride to keep the stud fee.

It's not about making money to me

I hunt mostly my own now. I have been the hired gun many times in the past. It got old being told when and where to go.

I have been the sponsor on 3 guys when my work got busy. All 3 times I took the shaft,so no more free rides here to a guy with a light and a habit.

Jim,I can name a big timer that's won several major titles that I know never loads up to go hunting. He enjoys the business side of it. Some of his dogs are in my back yard. He enjoys wheeling and dealing instead of strollin and rollin
