If u are going to competition hunt any at all, when he trees when u get there. Tie him. Big step in competition getting him under control at tree.

depends on the dog

Some dogs don't need to be tied at the tree. The ones that don't run off with the squirrel and stay up on the tree. Yes comp. hunting you should tie the dog. More than 1 dog at the tree, tie the 1 that didn't tree it 1st back and don't let it get the squirrel. If your not that good of a shot and timber a lot of squirrel, a tied dog will probably loose it up there...

Tying a dog is the best habit you can get into even if Sq timbers after you tie the dog they will get all the experience timbering before you get to the tree I don't tie now as much as I have in past because I guess I have got lazy in my older days but should always tie,and go to the tree before leashing the dog that way the dog get in a habit u coming to the tree to get him or her.

I tie dogs back when hunting with other dogs or comp hunting. I don't feed a dog that I have to tie to the tree to get it to stay at tree. I will not tolerate milling around and being lazy at tree either. Handling dog at tree is a good practice to get in, but its not good if that is the only way you can keep your dog at the tree.
