How do you choose a STUD DOG?

Comment by listing the numbered options in order of your preferences.. If options aren't listed then voice them.

1. Must be a titled dog (Champion)
2. Must have hunted with him
3. Must have contactable references
4. Must already have proven offspring
5. Must be within reasonable distance (location)
6. Must have the traits that compliment my gyp
7. Must be owned by reputable breeder/kennel
8. Must be out of preferred stock/bloodline
9. Must be line bred
10. Must be out cross

I ignore most all of what you have listed there, with one exception.....

I HAVE to have hunted with the dog, and preferably one or two of his litter mates. I also want to hunt with pups out of him, if he is busy being a stud dog, that shouldn't be too hard.

I always remember, YOU ARE NOT GETTING THE STUD DOG, YOU ARE GETTING WHAT HE REPRODUCES......

I've been breeding hunting dogs for 40 years, and I'm telling you that titles mean NOTHING in the breeding pen. You can't cover up faults in your gyp by strengths in the stud.

And finally, if you don't want another one just like it...don't breed it!

Lol

Thanks for having the Kahuna's to comment on this one Joe! Most talk a big game but are afraid to put words on a thread like this for others to read. I like your 4th and 5th line!

I like to hunt with the dog also , But in any line of feist they have to be a lock down TREE dog. In my years of huntin them that is the weakest link. Personaly I'll take a old country feist with no papers or one with 5 generation blood line. Just as long as they will stay treed....
