Chey and I were gone to a hunt last weekend , one of those un-speakable $ ones and I discovered Bakersville Pioneer Village . If you are ever in the SW MO area I would highly recommend you stop by . It is located not to far past Springfield just a few miles outside Mansfield which is on 60 hwy .
This place has every kind of rare seed you could ever think of plus some . It was well worth the stop ! They are closed on Saturdays but open Sunday - Friday . The 1st Sunday of every month March thru Oct they have a festival with vendors set up lots of homesteaders and a few hippies , people who can grow things better than I lol .
I sure Chey had a great time going there shopping for seeds , touring the Laura Engles Wilder house (also located @ Mansfield) and stopping at every yard sell in the county spending his winnings on everything but dogs . Many I won't be starting till next year , probably kill them all and they will have a repeat customer .
They also have a great catalog you can request .

They have 2 that are white on inside first one is called New Jersey Yellow , Sweet Potato #PL116 it has creamy golden/whitish skin and white like potato inside . Says old fashioned favorite on New Jersey families since 1780's
Other one Omani Pink , Sweet Potato #PL118 has skin color like red potato and then white on the inside . You can get on the rare seed web site in my first post to order with the item # .

How in the heck to do get rid of them ???
I had heard of these hungry little bugs but had never had them before and now my flower beds have had an invasion . Thank goodness they haven't found the garden yet . I sprayed down the roses and ect , something I really don't like to do killing off the good and bad along with the pollinators too (my garden is fairly close to the house and needs all the help it can get) but the beetles are back . I bought the bag/traps over the weekend . The direction said to hang them about 30 ft away from flowers or whatever they are feeding on to attract them away and into it so far they prefer the flower garden around the house . Tonight I resorted to hand picking them off and killing them I am sure their friends will be here tomorrow . The other thing nearly everyone I picked was a mating pair would like to break this life cycle .
On the subject of traps the wasp hanging traps have not attracted a single wasp hung directly under an eve they have taken up resendence in . Save your money if you were thinking of buying one . The attractant in it has attracted nothing .

I agree Bakers Creek seeds is all i use and love the taste of the heirloom plants better on the beetles have you tried seven dust thats all i ever put on stuff and seems to work

I just have a few of the Baker's Creek seeds in the ground this year it was June when I discovered the place and a few will soon be planted for my fall/winter garden . Next year I will be able to get started on time I have a ton I bought I will start indoors and transplant in the spring .
Beetles - I sprayed them with 7 last week guess I will dust the heck out of them . I am really concerned with all the mating pairs they will be back with vengence but not sure what their life cycle is . Gonna be doing some research , guess I should consider myself lucky they haven't found the garden , they seem to prefer roses right now .

The Spectracide Bag-A-Bug Japanese Beetle Trap caught a few last night . I think maybe the fireworks scared them into it now they haven't figured out how to get out lol .
Don are you related to my husband ? He had 2 uncles named Don Cummings (long story both his dads brothers ; this is my brother Don and my other brother Don lol) both passed away before we were married . Donald seems to be a family name . His grandpa was (Henry)Virgil Cummings , he sold cars for nearly eighty years and lived near Tiff City , Mo he came from a pretty large family and lots of coonhunters .

Chuck if you love to garden like we do Bakersville is worth the stop I never knew there were so many varities and many old ones you can't find anywhere else . If you play your cards right you can hit a hunt while there a few flea markets and yard sales to keep the wife happy . It is also Amish country so they quite often are set up at farmers markets and road side stands selling homebaked goods and furniture . Mansfield , Ava and Lebanon all have hunting clubs . Just remember seed place is closed on Saturdays . 1st Sunday of the month is the festival but open Sun - Fri . We stay @ Ava when we go down there is a Super 8 there not much else in the area unless you stayed in Springfield . They also have the big Utchman reunion hunt @ Ava in June every year .

Don IDK on any of his family history but our new sister-in-law is working on it so I will pass that info along . My side most records go back 400-500 years I am a Mayflower desendent so most has been documented and is alot easier to trace on my other side a couple of my cousins are Mormons and they have excellent geneology records .
As for they gardening if you don't enjoy it switch to raised beds they are alot less work if you just mulch nearly everything no weed pulling just plant , water and eat . My bigger enclosed space I built with cut up telephone poles put a fence around it (cukes , pole beans , gourds grow on it) inside are raised beds all around and and a winding small path down the middle .I also used several pallets in it that are filled with dirt the rows are used for planting lettuce , onions, carrots I have one with just rows of herbs again no weeding . Some of the pallets with smaller gaps I took off every other board to make a wider gap . This year we added to and built deeper raised beds around the outside of the fence using $ boards from a local saw mill they are oak so should last .
