At what age?

When do you start hunting a pup in the hunts? If they go out and tree coon on there own with no help on a consistent basis? Just like alittle input. Thanks

Well very young hounds are hunted spring and fall at Super Stakes. But there is more to think about than a youngster being consistently good at treeing coons. You never know exactly what you are hunting your dog with in a competition. If your dog is still impressionable I would be very careful hunting him with comp dogs. Even strange dogs in a pleasure hunt for that matter. I would wait until I could call the dog "mature". That depends on the dog not necessarily it's age.

DFred hit the nail on the head and I would just add that there is the whole junk running thing too...young dogs can be impressionable and enough times with enough pressure and the dog you thought you had broke might decide to take off.

One really has to ask his or herself one main question. Is this pup expendable or not. Is the pup replaceable or does it have future greatness in your mind at a very young age. Everyones opinion on what they believe to be a pup is different. For me,once a pup hits the age of 1 yrs old. It is considered a young hound and pup is out of the vocabulary. Some consider them to be pups until 2 years old. Some pups are very independant and some not so much. If your askin this ? you most know what's on the end of the lead. Just ask yourself the question above and answer in honestly and you'll come up with the right decision. How old is your pup. I have a young hound here and I made a decision with him earlier this year on not taking him to spring SS. He's now 13 months old. Over the years, I've started puttin them in hunts at 9 months old, now I look at it different. What ever the choice, good luck with it,Danny G.

Food for though. I once wrote up a young male for fighting on a UKC hunt. This was his SECOND write up for fighting! Two weeks later he was hunted in the SS pup hunt. Some people have no care what they do to your dog.

In most cases it has nothing to do with the dog and everything to do with the owner. I've seen 6 mo. old pups entered in hunts and older pups entered that weren't ready. When asked the owner had reasons from wanting to help the club to thought it would be good training for the pup.
