rules on yep hunts

ok I don't know the best way to go about this, but here it is last weekend there was a youth hunt and I know of 4 or 5 kids that got turned away cause they couldn't make it to the yep class and I haven't found anywhere it says they can not hunt if they didn't take the class and in no way am I saying they shouldn't have the class but should we turn away our youth hunters from hunting. so the ? is should they have to take the class to hunt ?

please no negative on this we talked to ukc they said they have to take it to hunt or show

Here's the parameters of YEP events. Make sure you check out page two as well.

According to the poll it's ok these days to forget about homework, practice, education and learning the rules of the game. Just play.

YEP events were set up to do a whole lot more than just hunt or show.

is this the guidelines

UKC Youth Education Program (YEP) Event Guidelines

The Basic Course Objectives – The YEP program parameters effective 1-1-09 permit a club to do a one day YEP event culminating with a licensed bench show and nite hunt. It is expected however that only those clubs with the intent of sponsoring a quality, day time educational and activities program for the youth apply for a YEP event. One of our basic objectives is to give our kids the spotlight for the day. A club should not go into this as a revenue making project or for the championship points availability for members dogs. The long term goal is to keep our kids participating in the sport and encourage them to introduce others to our coonhunting heritage. As a way of accomplishing that, our short term goal is to provide them with a fun, educational outing where they are made to feel special and appreciated

im not saying they don't need to take it but I don't think kids should be sent home and not hunt cause they couldn't make it I know of three of the kids were at our event 50 miles away which was a field trial and water race it was over about 4:30 or so but the class was at 5:30 there was no way they could of made it but they drove a hour and a half to be turned away is there not a way to fix this it was not posted online that you have to take the course to hunt or show and I have read the rules a lot of times still don't see where it says they can't hunt not trying to get them out of taking the class but they can hunt any hunt but a youth hunt without taking the class is that skipping the home work

There's quite a bit more, including a second page, that is not included with what you have copied.

In any case, we understand that it's hard for any club or official to have to turn down an entry for a youth but rules are rules.

That said; an alternative might be where the club lets them hunt. They just are not eligible for the licensed portion of the event. ?? Just an idea.

yep hunts

Rules are rules and there is no better time to learn that than at an early age, we are trying to develop youth that will carry on our sport with honor and dignity! The YEP stands for Youth Educational Program i believe, if they don't want to spend the time takeing the short class then they can go to a regular hunt where they don't have too! JMO Gene Parrow

Jason

State youth hunt is the 27th and the kid has to be 5 to enter. My son turns 5 on the 5th of July. Would it be fair if we went against the rules and my son won it and wasn't even old enough to be there? No it wouldn't cause we would be cheating. Rules are rules. Next year y'all better be ready cause he will be.

im not even saying to bend the rules but come on is it for the kids to hunt or not I thought that is what is was all about that is the goal right we need to come up with ways to get them in the hunt they can hunt any other hunt without taking it but when they can hunt with there age group they can't how is this helping youth out now they didn't take the class and they don't get to hunt either I think a online class would be the way to go

and speaking of the state youth you don't have to do the class for it that would be a hell of a time to get a lot of kids I would think when they are all together

Here's an idea, when these hunts started here locally' they had a couple of "well known" hunters and bench show folks, give the classes. The events stated early, had one before lunch and one after; the clubs donated food and drinks, and the kids made a day of it. Now, they have shortened the whole event to a required class and the show and hunt, all wound up into a quick little ball. Why not make the event longer, try to get the kids to participate and actually get something out of the experience. Attend the State Youth Hunt at Stigler, these guys put on a great event; it's an all day event and the kids and adults all get something from it, even if they don't do well in the hunt. The last time I was there, they had fifty kids and dogs on the bench and fifty kids and dogs in the woods. Every thing in life has rules and consequences; we all have to learn to deal with them. Tom

State hunt does not require a yep card cause it's not a yep event! I've held this event for several years and never needed one.

You are absolutely correct, Eddie; I was just giving some insight on the beginning of youth hunts here in the state. You guys do a great job with the youth hunt, top shelf, all the way. Tom

this is exactly what we are going to do with kids that are just under the age limit at the state youth hunt. we are going to encourage them, pair them up, and cut em loose! those kids won't ever know they weren't getting the same points as the others and will leave there with a smile!

I'd just like to know well ahead of time upcoming YEP events. I know I can search a month out on events, but I would like a list of all upcoming YEP events for the year. I emailed UKC but never received a reply.

Adam, that's a list we could not really provide because we don't actually know what events are YEP events until the club confirms them as such. Which is not much time before they are advertised. We could come up with a list of what were YEP events last year but that would not necessarily be accurate for this year.

It should be noted that the Youth Championship Event at Wyatt, In. this Saturday IS NOT a YEP Event and so no class is required.

Gotcha, thanks.

I only knew of one local to me that held one annually but I asked while at a hunt last weekend and they've decided to simply hold a youth hunt. I'm good with either, But my son in particular would like to attend a YEP event.

Thanks
