Just wondering how many hunt when the heat is in the high 80s and the 90s at night with high humidity!!!I talked to my vet and he said it was best not to hunt them when it's like this so they won't get over heated and have a heat stroke!!!Thanks in Advance

I try my best to hunt wet spots on nights like you have described. Walking in the water will help them keep cool, and even then I only hunt for a few hours.

I do. Living on the gulf coast, I wouldn't be able to hunt but a couple of months a year if I didn't. Just take water and keep it to a drop or two a night in the dead of summer.

The heat last night soon melted my enthusiasm for the hunt. The dogs struggled, we struggled and the only winner was the skeeters. Like was mentioned, please have some water for your dogs as they will need it. We hunted Saturday night and it was maybe the best night of pleasure hunting we had in a while. Last night was as bad as it gets.
Saturday we made 2 drops with 2 dogs and they stayed split and made 4 trees and had seven coon in the 4 trees. Last night we hunted the same area and made 3 drops with one dog that covered over 2 1/2 miles on the ground and never made a bark. The other dog did manage a cold den tree and half way treed on it. Taking tonight off. Going to try tomorrow night just because the dog needs to stay in shape.
Comp hunt in GA Fri and Sat nights then Tuesday next week Flora, IL here we come for a few nights. I hope it is cooler up there. The problem is Summer has not really got here yet. lol
The past week during the day if I laid my cell phone down outside, in a few minutes it says it is to hot to operate.
Again, take care of your dogs as it is going to be a long summer. I have had two friends from up North tell me about a supplement called K9 Super Fuel. I have some coming and will share how it works this summer.

Most vets today have very little contact with true working dogs. If someone was going to hunt an out of shape dog in the heat I would say the same thing.

I had a popular vet in town tell me that my treeing walkers are a rare dog breed. Her and I parted ways. Now, I have a vet who knows the difference between a top physical conditioned working dog and a lap dog.

This doesn't mean that I believe you don't use common sense during extreme weather conditions as many have already pointed out.

I would be more concerned about some of my fellow coon hunters hunting in the heat.

i don't hunt any in the summer after i had a beagle had what i think was a heat stroke carry him to a creek got him cool down

You can't even breath in South Ga with the Temps we have. Kennels Under Oak Trees. We turn on the sprinklers (On Top of the Kennels) every day about this time. We have two 13 years olds & one 11 year old dog. It's really tuff on them. Hunting in watery areas for us is dangerous this time of year. Gators & Snakes. Keep Safe Out There.

Being an old sleddog musher we had a general rule we went by. If the temp plus humidity added together equaled over 110, we didn't run. This kept our dogs from heat stroke and exhaustion. Don't believe you will find any dog in better shape then sled dogs. Before I hear, huskies have long hair, better look at the Alaskian huskies, their hair is as short as a hounds.

This is by no means the absolute bottom line to running dogs in the summer heat. The sleddogs mentioned above were long distance dogs so a regular run was around 40 miles at a time. Coon hounds don't do these distances so I would think a lot of common sense and even more water should be a great starting point.

I hunt my dogs year round but I look at my dogs like athletes cuz that is what they are. A athlete from up north cannot expect to be able to run and compete in the souths weather but he has to slowly get acclimated to the weather. dogs are the same way you have to train and train for them to be in good shape for your area and if you push them to hard they will get hurt. But I still bring water because athletes drink water and have to replace there electrolites they burn during there exercise. just my 2 cents

I'm surprised no one mention dog food I feed dog food that don't have corn in the Summer kept then in shape. Corn make dog's hot

A lot of dog food company make it with out corn little more expensive then what I feed in the winter diamond, native ,victor, natural recipe is what I feeding right now 27 / 12 out 5 star it gets a 3 Purina dog chow gets a one

Raw meat is what I fed my huskies and also dried fish. Up north one can order 50 lb blocks of frozen meat or chicken skins.

When I cut the dogs loose at 11pm last night it was 78 degrees with 98% humidity.Dogs were hot but did ok.I been feeding cheap Dog Chow lately.
