I have a redbone that had an intestinal blockage from eating a dog toy when we were in a dog park--a spongy rubber thing. It actually sat inside his gut for a good six months to a year before it passed far enough down to make him sick. Didn't show up on x rays. He vomited and had diarrhea for over a month before he finally vomited up the toy. He lot so much weight I thought I was going to lose him, but he recovered fully.
Dogs sometimes eat all kinds of inedible stuff. I had one friend whose bluetick got a blockage. She had him operated on and they pulled out 8 dish towels! I've seen them get sick from chewing up wood, from tennis balls, and one of mine once ate our jack-o-lantern after halloween and was vomitting pieces up for weeks. Doesn't have to be anything bacterial involved, although it could be.
My best recommendation is to give the dog pepto bismol to relieve the symptoms. When mine lost so much weight, he actually got to like the pepto bismol and would lap it up. Otherwise, use a turkey baster, hold the muzzle shut, and squirt it in where the gap between the teeth is behind the canines. They also make pepto bismol pills that don't need to be chewed, although they're sometimes hard to find. Didn't cure him, but it made him a lot more comfortable. Sure made a mess, though.
When mine was at his sickest, he would lap up chicken broth, and that's all that kept him alive for awhile. Rice cooked in chicken broth sometimes stayed down as well.
Sometimes vets recommend feeding a slice of bread or two soaked in vegetable oil to ease passage of an indigestible object through the system. However, it sounds like your dog is too sick for that.
If you have access to a vet clinic where they can do an ultrasound, they may be able to find what is blocking his digestive tract if its something that doesn't show up on x-rays. Its expensive, but it isn't invasive and doesn't make the dog more uncomfortable. A veterinary teaching hospital or a large regional vet clinic may have ultrasound equipment. Ask your vet where.
Hope he gets better.
