What are the biggest faults you think the line of red dogs you are running now has?

1. Too tight on the ground
2. Takes too long to open
3. Too slow to locate
4. Does not hunt hard enough
5. Too noisy in the kennel
6. Overall other bad kennel manners
7. Too aggressive on the tree
8. Too slow on track
9. Not accurate enough
10. Too trashy on small game (possum, rabbits, skunk, porkies)

12. Stands on its head too much

Two things I still see more than I would like in some of the crosses I have made are...
Too independent....doesnt want to be with other dogs at all.
Too tight on strike....like to work the track a bit and get it lined out and headed in right direction before they open.
I see this more in the heavy Outlaw line bred crosses than I do with the Moonlight crosses.
I love a competition dog with an independent streak...but have been beat by it in thin coons where the guide points the cast towards a feeder or the only spot around where your going to strike a coon and 50 yards out...mine splits off and goes a different direction and won't turn around when the rest of the cast strikes a track. Where I live and hunt 80% of the time, it's not an issue because mine will find another coon pretty quick...but in the mountains or out west...they may be out of hearing before they find their own if they split off in the wrong direction. And that has cost my dogs a few cast wins in parts of the country where coons are few and far between.

The three I am hunting right now are all related.

Comparing them to my ideal hound I think they are too tight on the ground and take too long to open, the females do not hunt hard enough but the male is OK, one of the females is too lazy and may not stick around here much longer, and all three could use a little more desire to work a tough track, but I see that part improving. All three have strong points, too. It's tough to get real balance in a hound.

All dogs have faults and none of the three are even close to top dogs...I have tried many other lines in walkers and redbones, and have dealt with all of the faults on the list at one time or another. This is what I have experienced...maybe you guys have much better stock.

Takes to long to open. They will make sure it is one they like and then run it. Many will go out and look for a decent track and if they can't find one come back and hit whatever they have to no matter how cold and put it up a tree. So for me I would rather them wait until they are on one they are going to tree. But that means especially with babblers I often don't get first strike. 2nd and 3rd with more 2nds than 3rds. But they most always get 1st tree.
To smart. They can figure out how to get out of anything short of Fort Knox and thankfully they are pretty straight, pretty easy starting and pretty accurate. But if they have something they are trying to hide from ya it's hard to catch em doing it and it can make them a bit harder to correct on some things.
Fang pressure is an issue the Fireball stuff as a whole holds a bit of a problem with. They don't like getting mauled on the tree. Some will take getting throwed down a creek bank multiple times by a biter and keep on treeing like this male I am currently hunting or try to play keep away while moving around the tree to stay out of biting range. However, many will also leave the tree and get treed somewhere else or at least try to or will sull up if they were hit hard enough. The end of this is many become loner type hounds that want to tree away from others. My stuff can fight enough to hold their own and if pushed they will whoop about anything of any breed I have ran across but they don't like to fight other dogs in any way. Even though they are extremely gritty on game.

Hmmmm I have 8 hounds and have tried several lines . My moonlight timber chipper male is always solo does his own thing hunts hard doesn't get deep unless he strikes big time yard barker . I got another male got yellow river hill Billy redhot Clyde that opens good get's deep but will leave for 500 yards to tree with another dog . Got a half outlaw half pepper female little tight hard tree dog bit lacks drive doesn't get deep unless it's a runner she'll circle around and come sit at the truck . Had a half fireball male get real deep lot's of mouth on the ground but wasn't loud and never would stick a tree . Got a female that can strike and run a track like nobody's business but wants nothing to do with a coon or a tree . Got 2 young females starting to turn on one off wades dog's doing well for her little bit of exposure . One off perkeys night stalker rusty red deacon on bottom waiting for her to mature . Got a female from a friend I've been working bred real good by the ukc producer's list . Had her running and treeing but she was skidding and just quit don't know if she'll ever come out of it or hunt again . Got nitech Coffmans smoking little lady not very loud but will get deep puts out good on track and tree stay put too .

I believe we never know what we will get when we make a cross or if they'll ever be any good or stand a chance . I've seen a lot of good dog's that just didn't have the money behind them like some do . But I also believe that those that truly breed for better dog's will do just that . I have my mind set on just that and will do so to the best of my ability even though my resources and funds are extremely limited . It's very expensive this coonhound life I mean I got more money in dog's then I do in my truck . Price we pay for our enjoyment . I try to be as honest as I can because all I have is my word . Well and a couple decent coonhound .

1. Lack of time in the timber.
If given the right training most will tree coons, that requires lots of all alone and late at night time.
