Just wondering what people use to prevent getting poison ivy. I just ordered the posion ivy pill. Hope it stops me from catching it cause once i get it I usually keep it all season. Do yall know any other prevention methods.

The kick in the tail is that like around here the trees that are covered with it is usually what the coon will run to because it is easy to climb. Watch handling dogs and raccoon after they tree up a big ole poison ivy vine covered tree.
It's the oil from the leaves that does it. I am lucky...I am immune to it and have never had it, but have several buddies that get it from looking at the stuff...they used this stuff called Rhulli jelly or something like that. It was a jell that you rub on your skin as a preventative.
I haven't heard anyone mention it lately but it worked pretty good because everyone used to use it. Try thin gloves and duct tape your pants legs and sleeves shut, anything to keep it off your skin. Have someone take your outer close off with gloves too, or they will get it.

I get poison ivy if i look at it across a field. I found if I always wear a long sleeve shirt and wash my hands with dawn dish soap when I got home it greatly reduced the amount I got it. Also, if you do get it just use dawn dish soap to dry it out. It works great. Wearing the long sleeve shirt is terrible during the summer but a little sweat is better than poison ivy for me.

I don't know how to prevent it other than just keep away from the stuff, but when I get it I always used pickling lime to dry it up. Add a little water to make it a paste and then spread it on the infected area. When it dries just flake it off. I do this once a day and it's usually gone in under a week.

If you get it use zanfel. You can get it at walmart. It's in a little tube. Just follow directions. It works great. I don't think anyone in the world can get it as bad as I do. One time at Black and Tan days I got it so bad that my face was as big as a basketball. It was horrible. Zanfel works great. The best stuff I have ever heard of.

after every hunt wash your clothes and take a shower using dawn dish soap. dont use bar soap or a wash cloth as the oil from the poison ivy stays with them.

Talk to your doctor there is a shot you can take that will prevent you from getting it. 3 shots. Once a week for three weeks. You have to do it every year. This is the time of year to do it.

I never catch the stuff. anytime any friends or family get it around there place, I always get a call to come clear it out for them :/.

Usually I get it pretty bad, but I finally put my brain to use. The oil in the leaves (urishol) causes a histamine release in the body, also known as an allergy attack. one way to lessen the effect of a histamine reaction is Benadryl. I take two Benadryl 30 minutes to an hour before I go hunting and I got 1 spot about the size of a dime last year. my fault, I took it right before I got out of the truck to cast the dogs and walked right into a patch.

there's a little more medical explanation that goes with it but basically it keeps the histamines from being released in the first place.

bath in Clorox water and use Fels Napha soap.. Take an anti histamine that doesn't make you sleepy.. If you get it rub the juice from Jewel Weed on it some call it water weed... You can take prednisone too.. It is a steroid so ya gotta be careful.

I feel bad for those of you who catch it. it must really make coon hunting suck in the summer .

on the flip side, I don't catch the stuff even if I roll in it or burn it...........but for some reason every bug in the woods thinks im an "all you can eat smorgus board". Im like a magnet for every tick, skeeter, and any other blood sucker in the woods :/

Try jewell weed! Grows wild usually on creek banks. It will dry it up in a day or two. Don't know where or how to explain what it looks like you could try and Google it. It's a miracle cure though

I spent my entire childhood with poison oak. Over and over. Swelled my face up at least one time. Once I got up about 19 years old and started coon hunting, I hardly ever got it. But I don't hunt in short sleeves either. And I wear gloves.

This stuff has been a life saver for me. You can get the individual wipes or just get the big bottles like I did. Wash well after hunting with this stuff and it will remove the oils without drying out your skin. You can also use it to treat it once it starts. You can use it for removing the oils from clothes and dogs also. You can also use it to remove skunk oil scent from dogs hair coats.

Unfortunately the reaction causes more than just histamine release from mast cells, it sets off a complex form of immune mediated reaction against your skin. Urushiol is a mixture of catchol derivatives. The major catechol on poison ivy leaves is pentadecylcatechol. If urushiol is washed off the skin within an hour or so, the reaction can be largely prevented. However, if left on the skin, some diffuses through the skin, where it is metabolized to quinone derivatives. These form covalent complexes with skin proteins such as keratin. These complexes appear foreign to the immune system, which therefore attacks them. Severe cases require prednisone/prednisolone therapy to block the immune mediated response.
