Advice on keeping Coonhounds healthy?

Fairly new to the sport... sorry for asking a dumb question... but hopefully I get a few replies to help me out.

I have a 6 year old English dog and 6 month old B&T pup.
I have taken the time to build a nice kennel and have insulated housing and heated water buckets. (I'm from upstate NY.... very cold)

I'm very curious how all you veteran hound hunters handle deworming and ticks/fleas general routine health stuff ?

What schedule and products should I use? Seems like my vet doesn't understand hunting dogs when they tell me to buy a flea collar.....

There are monthly pills that prevent heartworms, most stomach worms too. Also a monthly pill that prevents fleas. For fleas its called "comfortis" . Several kinds of heartworms - heartgard is one. I would find a different vet and ask them about these monthly pills.

on my outside dog's i just use ceader chips and wash the pens out with creolene and spray it around outside of the pens never have a problem with fleas you can't beat the comfortis pill we use it on the wifes house dog it is on the pricy side but works great you won't see a flea on your dog with the comfortis pill lot's of guy's use ivemec for heart worms but i never use it

If you just have a couple hounds ive had great luck with trifexis but it is pricy so i just use drontol plus and ivomec. and as far as fleas i get the pet armour plus for 130# dogs put all three doses in a small bottle and you can make it streach for less money. good luck and have a blast with your dogs!

There are two newer oral products on the market that have been working well for both Fleas and Ticks. One is NexGard made by Merial (maker of Frontline), and the other is Bravecto made by Merck. They are both in the same class of drugs. NexGard is given monthly and Bravecto is given every 3 months. We have over a thousand dogs now using these two products in our hospital with great success. They have been the most effective products in our area for fleas and are starting to replace Comfortis and Trifexis where resistance may be coming a problem. They have the best safety margin of any products we have sold and had zero toxicity at 1000 times label dose. They have the advantage over Comfortis/Trifexis now because they last longer, are more palatable ( dogs actually like the taste), and fewer GI side effects.

For deworming it's hard to beat either Heartgard Plus/Drontal Plus or Sentinel Spectrum on a monthly basis. You can certainly do just as good with Ivomec 1% liquid dosed at .1cc per 10# monthly combined with Strongid -T 1cc/10# monthly or Safe-Guard (10% Fenbendazole) at 1ml/5#. You can also dilute the Ivomec if you just need a heartworm preventative, but the higher dose will kill hookworms. Take a stool sample in to your new vet every year and have them submit it to Idexx Labs or Antech for Ova/ Parasites and Giardia (if it is a problem in your area). These laboratories use high speed centrifugation techniques and DNA probe tests for finding parasites that are commonly missed in the hospital. Have your dog tested for Heartworm prior to starting a heartworm preventative and once a year after starting.

If you need more tick control then adding a Preventic Collar (Amitraz) works great. Change it out every 3 months during the tick season.

For feeding I like Purina Pro Plan Sport All Life Stages 30/20 for growing pups and active dogs that need the energy or for winter feeding when it's really cold and they need the added energy. There are so many diets out there that claim to be more natural, more organic, better digestibility, no corn, etc., but when it comes to feeding performance dogs and seeing how they look , act, and perform it's hard to beat this food for the money. Purina Veterinary Diets and Pro Plan have an excellent safety and recall record in their Veterinary and Pro Plan plants (not to be confused with their other plants). Quality control is one of the most important things to look for in a dog food vendor that most people overlook. It sells for about $1 per pound which is pretty reasonable for the quality you get. Many here have had great luck with Victor diets also, but unless you live in Texas it will cost you much more.

The Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 line has been really good with a good performance record.

Check out the reviews on Pro Plan Sport 30/20 Performance Diet and you will see it has one of the highest user ratings of any diet out there, with most reviews between 4.7 and 5 out of 5. That's hard to achieve. The only bad reviews I've seen on it were people who never used it but feel they know everything about nutrition to rate a product without feeding it to their pets. If you have a hard keeper or need a diet for a dog you are running in the ground and have a hard time keeping weight on, then give it a try. You will be impressed and your dog will thank you for it.

#1 The most important thing you can do for your dogs health is feed a quality dog food with a good protien/fat ratio I like at least 26/18 (we feed Victor it is corn , glutien , soy & grain free & added pro & pre boitics for immune system & digestive health)
#2 A heartworm prevention . You can by heart guard pills at vet or give .5 cc of Ivomec once a month (have old dog tested first before starting)
#3 Other parasites . As someone else suggested Drontal Plus , give dog pills according to weight then again in 21 days (breaks life cycle) then repeat about every 3 mo unless you notice re-infestation before then . Drontal will get pretty much everything including tapes .
#4 Flea & tick prevention . NexGard it is like the Comfortis pill but also prevents and kills ticks not just fleas (pill every 30 days you can buy the up to 120lbs and cut in half to save $) With all the tick born viruses affecting dogs it is the best way to go . It works !
#5 The only supplements I would recommend for daily use are fish oil and glucosamine/chondroitin (joint health for older dog) .
#6 Diatomaceous Earth sprinkled in dog houses . This stuff is cheap & avaliable at about any feed store it kills every kind of bug in dry conditions . We do not recommend the use of cedar chips in dog houses or boxes . Many dogs are allergic to them plus Chey has a therory about cedar messing with dogs noses . Use straw in cold weather not hay .

I think the feed issue is just going to depend on how hard u hunt your dogs pro plan is great heard the same about victor but the did a study with feild trial dogs on protien you can find it online it was done by sport dog. the conclusion was a hard hunting dog needs atleast 30% protien to protect its muscles and prevent injury. i would read this study and see if it fits you and your dogs.

These guys did a good job covering what your need. What you will find is there are a lot of different ways to accomplish the same thing. Some are cheaper but that doesn't mean they don't work.

Since you are in a part of the country totally different than I am and you get some frozen ground which I think would kill some of the parasites we have down here, we might different treatment.

1. Good feed. Everyone feeds something different. I feed Victor.
2. Down here in the South the most important preventative item is HEARTWORM prevention. I accomplish that with a once a month oral Ivermec.
3. Treat your kennel area with some flea and tick spray
4. Routine Baths and dipping with medicated shampoo. Many good ones out there to choose from.
5. Very important to keep a log of what you do and when you do it.

All good suggestions. I use ivomec horse paste and change up with Panacur, About 5 times a year. Every month is too hard on the dog, I think.

You can make just about anything for pennies on the dollar, but for only a couple dogs, it can be time consuming and not really worth it.
Outside of food, which you will get vast opinions. This is an area of trial and error. I personally have had the best luck with Taste of the wild.

There are your yearly vaccines and state issued licenses.
I do those every Jan.
You will need a 7 way vaccine on all your dogs Once a year.
You will need a rabies vaccine the first time a 1 year and 3 year vaccines after that.Find a clinic for these it will be much cheaper. Don't know where call the local pet store and ask.

Heartworm Prevention
Most require a script. You can buy them here at www.petbucket.com with out a script. This need administer monthly, I do mine on the first of every month. You can make your own with ivermectin but it requires some math, and diluting it and you will still need to deworm for rounds and hooks. I would recommend buying hartgaurd at pet bucket, it comes out to 4 or 5 dollars a month per dog.

Round worms and hookworms also needed treated monthly,
some heartworm preventives also include pyrantel which is the most commonly used dewormer. You can also by this by it self, and measure your own doses off of amazon.

Flea and ticks in the spring summer and fall. I use a topical treatment. I have good luck with sentry max, it can be found for dirt cheap on amazon. This also should be done monthly.

Our biggest problem in the north east are ticks and lymes.
I also add a preventic collar over the warmer months, check your dogs often and after hunting. These collars are very effective, but also have some nasty chemicals.

I think that's everything.
It can be overwhelming at first, break it down to one subject at a time, and study... You will figure it out.

Come up with a plan, and log all your treatments in a book that way you can reference them.
