I carry some stuff in the top of my box. A muzzle. pliers for porcupine quills, some stuff to stop bleeding, some of that tape from the farm store for wrapping up an injured leg wouldn't be a bad Idea but I don't carry anything in a kit to the woods with me. I carry enough crap as it is and I haven't seen an injury so bad yet that it couldn't wait until the dog got to the truck.

Shoot that's nothin. My cocker spaniel got beat up by a squirrel last fall "no lie". My wife made me take him to the vet. The girls in there all got a good laugh out of it when I told them my coon hounds fight racoons everynight but stupid here can't go pee without getting beat up by a squirrel! LOL

having hog hunted the last twenty years I carry enough stuff to do major surgery in the field and have only used my staple gun a couple times lol but I'd rather have it than not .

just a few basics is all you need . some wrap of some sort and a good anti-bacterial ointment or spray . I carry a staple gun but seldom use it . blood stop powder and I keep some benedryl in the truck it's good to have in case of snake bite . other than that most injury's can wait till you get to the house or the vets

Just to clarify, you have all that stuff in the truck but your not carrying it to the woods are you? I took him to mean he was making a pack to carry with him.

Your deffinately on the right track. You should have some of that stuff in your truck but you could trim that list of things pretty drasticly in my book. I clicked on that kit you posted, looks like a nice kit but there's a lot on there you wouldn't need for a field emergency IMO. Like a rectal thermometer, What are you going to do with that? If you need that the dog probably needs to go to the vet anyhow. I'd limit what's in the truck to the essentials you need to save the dog until you get it to a vet or atleast home. JMO

So out of the kit what would you consider the essentials?

yep I have a bag in the truck that is like a rolloing vet clinic lol . but in the field all I carry is a roll of flex wrap , a small bottle of blood stop and my staple gun . but that's for chasing them dang pigs , coon hunting I don't carry anything as I'm never that far from the truck . I guess if I was to carry anything coon hunting [ which I haven't yet ] it would just be a pack of Benadryl [ in warm weather ] and a roll of vet wrap .

I looked at the kit again and I think I would wing it and select my own items;
(1) A roll of the self adhesive wrap they sell for horses @ farm store
(2) A bulk roll of gauze
(3) skin stapler
(4) Bottle of peroxide
(5) needle nose pliers
(6) muzzle
(7) Benedryl tablets

This is more stuff than I currently have in my truck but I'm sure I'm a little neglegent. Keep in mind your truck kit is for EMERGENCY situations to get your dog home. If you want all that stuff in that kit for dog care at home I'd say go for it. I'm just giving you my opinion of what I would keep in the truck and I'm willing to bet if you did bye that kit for home use you still wouldn't use 3/4 of it in 10 yrs. JMO

I keep a shoe-box sized kit in the truck, but don't carry much in the woods. I do carry a small pill box with me containing benadryl, aspirin, and a few other things useful for either me or the hound. A lighter so I can build a fire if necessary.
In the truck, I keep a multitool plus a bottle of acepromazine from the vet and better needle nose pliers for pulling porky quills. Vet wrap. EMT gel (I've used that on me more often than on the dogs). Stiptic powder (blood stopper). Blue kote (this has a tendency to spill and make a mess--put it in a zipper bag or other tightly closeable vessel!). Ichthammol (drawing salve, for help removing splinters, shards of glass, etc. in either me or my hound).
Not medical supplies, but essential: Spare batteries and magnets for various tracking system components. Nite hunt rule book and coonhound advisor. Toenail clippers. Band aids for humans. Knee elastics for humans. A change of clothes from head to toe for me. Thread and needle for sewing on stray buttons and repairing major rips to clothing--also good for splinter removal. Extra leads and rope for situations when someone, dog or human, needs to be hauled off a ledge or out of a pond, or if a lead breaks or a stray hound comes in. I also like to keep a small grappling hook available for thin ice rescues, although it never seems to be there when I need it.
