Shotguns are too loud and only increase the chance if gunshyness. Besides they ruin the hide.
My choice was the 10/22 until they came out with the Ruger American.

I too like and use the Thompson Center Hot Shot 22. It is well built, but light, short as a cricket or chipmunk , but a tack driver that is easy to load, and very safe to operate.

I have a little stainless savage bolt action with a plastic stock, took a hacksaw to the barrel 16 inches so its legal.
Never liked a semiauto for coon huntin, the coon comes out, things get excitin and you have a round in the chamber. Never liked a single shot either, every time you reload you have to find the coon again.

Henry lever action or Remington Nylon 66

I like the lever action in that you have to pull the hammer back, but i love my Nylon 66 because of the light weight and they can take a beating.

Best ever coon gun

Henry Lever Action. Holds 16 rounds, looks great(atleast before you take it coon hunting), will shoot any .22 round you put in it. $300.

Ruger 10-22 (pre plastic) w/choate folding stock. With stock folded is shorter than anything else, accurate, massive aftermarket acc., clip fed so easy loading/unloading, automatic, light and older Rugers are very reliable and tough.

Remington 581 that is 40 years old and has literally killed more coon than you can shake a stick at.. Used it to club coons, dogs, coyotes, thrown out of a truck window twice.. left hid in a culvert for a week and in the woods for several days and is scratched and beat to death.. the finish was all worn off the barrel and action and I hit it with a can of rustoleum this year before season.. looks like a new one!!

I am afraid that last year was it, bought two of those ruger americans, a long barrel and a compact and I believe the compact is going to the woods with me next fall..

Believe i'm going to strip down and refinish the old coon hunting rifle and retire her to the gun safe.. Bought it off a hunting buddy many years ago who died unexpectedly at a young age.. gun has some memories..

I've used and had alot of 22,s. The best I've used and still have is a pistol. The Stainless Ruger Mark III Competition. I've killed a pile of coon with it, the most accurate pistol I have ever owned. I also have 10/22 and a cricket. Have had many other 22,s that I have sold and kept these 3.

Henry Mini Bolt .22, Probably the lightest, hardest shooting 22 out there, you don't even know your packing a gun. It's a nail driver, and of course anything made by Henry is top of the line.

ruger mark II with lazer grips an shoulder holster

with 357 on hip for backup.

used to carry the ruger 10-22 but got tired of it hanging up on the crabapptrees an multiflori brairs when dogs treed where you had to fight your way thru the cutovers.
