Calm dogs at home hunt good in the woods

Tell me about dogs you have had that were just easy to keep at home, but turned it on in the woods...Sure is nice having one that knows the difference.

Calm dogs at home

All my hounds for the last 39 years have been kept in the house and have never failed in the desire to go hunting like they should. They know the difference between home and hunting time, like night and day.

My current Gr. Nt. Hooper Ridge Hangem High Holly is that way. I have been laid up for the most part since English Days last June and Holly has probably been to the woods 6 times since June and she still does not bark in the kennel, nor does she pace back and forth.

She is the only hound I have owned in 40 some years that doesn't raise a little cane when laid up for a month or more.

So Yes, I do have one and she will flat knock a hole in the dark, (by herself or in company) when I turn her loose, and absolutely straight. Truly a once in a lifetime female!!

I have one so easy and laid back that she doesn't even care to load up sometimes. But if I collar her up here at the house before we load up she gets fired up. I have a pup off her that is just the opposite. The pup is a little over a year old and stays fired up 24 / 7. And will be a mile deep before you know it doing nothing but running. When I say nothing but running that's just what she is doing. When mama dog gets parked she has coon most of the time.

Corey, he said ones that turn in on in the woods.

Ron, Hyde is like that. He's real calm at home

I have the nicest dog I ever owned right now. He was never a seconds trouble from day one. He is as good a pet as he is hunting dog. It didnt take much to break him off of running off game and he is a natural. I got him from Dave Zorn in Pa. His sire is Grntch. North Mountain Ruger out of Mr. Clean and his dam is Grntch. North Mountain Pride out of Buck Creek Mr. Smith.
He is very loud and can drive a track. He trees very good, but he's still young and I would like to see him tighten up on the tree a little. That is my only thing I would change. He didn't really start too early and he never barks in the kennel. I am very much looking forward to putting him in some hunts soon. This dog leads and handles very easy.
I know these type dogs are impossible to find and I was out of coon hunting for a while. You can best believe I know just how lucky I am to pick up such a nice dog on the first try...they are about one in a thousand the way my luck normally runs!!!

Old dog my dad had right before he quit bear huntin. I'm sure Ive talked about her on here a million times but in all honesty she was probably the finest hound Ive ever seen. No, she didn't want any part or runnin a coon, but old Ginger would really turn it on on a bear. She could trail bear tracks over a day old, had an awesome mouth, wasn't scared to pull hair but smart enough to stay out of the way when needed. Awesome dog. And she was the best behaved at home Ive ever seen. Never said a peep in the kennel, great with kids, gentle as could be, and she was smart enough to stay around the house if left runnin loose.

Thank you very much for the nice compliment!!!! I would love to put him on the bench if I could get him to stand. That dog will die here even if he never runs another track.

I've got one that's 11 that is kennel quiet. I've had him since he was a pup, can load up other dogs and he will bark a couple times and go in his house. Turn him loose in the woods and he is a open track dog and go as deep as he needs to find a coon. Droop Jr. and Rambo breeding. I'm hoping to get pups out of him if my female will come in heat.

Yep,
mine is 10 and you never hear him until I walk up with the feed bucket in the kennel, and that's just until he gets his first mouthful. LOL. In the woods? His record in the hunts around here speaks for its self. I must like him a lot because he is still here at my house and will die here, even if he turns 180 degrees on both the above traits that I admire so much.

msinc that is a fine looking young hound you have there.
Generally if you have smart hounds they will be both wonderful hunters and good pets, they know when it is time to please the master and have a little fun.

Whats Up Spot is the best hound around the house i have ever had i let him out every morning an night when i clean the kennels he never runs off. If its a nice day i just open his kennel up an he will just lay around in the shade. You don't need a leash in the woods. He never barks in the Kennel or the box a true once in a life time hound. An Spot made GrNtCh as a 1 yr old.An is a silver CH in PKC an just finished 22nd in this yrs world hunt.An finished 6th place in the 2011 PKC nationals.I can never thank Benny Parks enough for giving me the opportunity to own Spot

The Female I'm hunting right now is one of the better ones I have had. I have owned or hunted 7 generations on her bottom side and 5 on her top. She does everything I want her to do and you do not even know she is on the place. All of the dogs I get that I like die of old age on my place. Money cant replace them.

my old bluetick is as laid back as you would want. great house dog. but in the woods he is a whole different story. once broke a 2" leather collar to grab a coon. Now his half brother that I own is another thing again. he's housebroke and all but always on the move. its hard to believe at times that he and shi are related. But all my dogs live with me and still hunt.

I can't believe anyone would keep a dog that isn't both calm on the kennel, but with drive in the woods
