what a bad break

Four dog cast. Cast our dogs to start hunt. The dogs got in deep. One dog opened so we started to walk to get closer. We walked a good distance hearing one dog every so often. We then heard two more dogs treeing both dogs were struck then declared treed. They were way in there so we started to walk to them immediately. We walked about a minute then one handler wanted to stop and listen to see if he could hear his dog treeing or not. As soon as we stopped we heard dogs treeing incredibly closer to us. Dogs took minus for leaving tree as it was obvious that they were a lot closer to us then where they were declared treed. One guy declared his dog treed again so we waited the five minutes and started to walk to the dog treed. As we got closer we thought that the dog was on the other side of the river. Then we noticed another cast walking into the tree where one of our dogs was declared treed. We get closer to the river our dog declared treed was on our side. One of the dogs from the other cast had swam the river and was treeing with our dog. Neither of the two that took minus was even there. We called interference and time out so we could catch our dogs and move to another spot. We had one on the leash and one dog was close by and the other two were treeing in their original spots which they had already been minus for. we decided the meeting place would be where the closest dog now treeing was. he was about 600 yards from us. Mine was still 900 yards. I had a spectator with me so we took off for my dog. We get about 200 yards from her when we come up to a creek. This creek was about 25 yards wide that ran right into the river. We then started to walk the edge of it hoping that eventually it would get narrower so we could cross it. Keep in mind we r walking the edge kind of going back in the direction of the meeting place. We finally come across this old railroad crossing. We realize now that we aren't very far from meeting spot because we can see the lights of our other cast members. We get to other side of trestle and it is nothing but a 20 foot drop to the ground. My buddy bales off and goes and gets my dog. When he gets back we have no way to get the dog back up to me so we get the guide down there to ask him if he knew of a place to cross the creek. He said there wasn't any and the creek ran all the way to next road. He told my buddy to walk to the next woods and get on the old train track and go to the next road and we would pick him up there. So I went back to truck with cast and it was along walk back. We went to get my buddy and dog. Hour gets me by two minutes I guess. I guess when we had her by the trestle I should have used everyones lead strap and risked damaging her health and pull her up by her neck. Oh well there is always next weekend.

Nights like that are what make you appreciate the good ones. Sounds like a time when a Garmin with birdseye would have saved the night.

my dog was scratched because I let a spectator cross a deep river to get him while the cast was in time out. I had 600 plus with 40 minutes left to hunt. the closest to me had 50 plus. master of hounds said no spectator can handle a dog for any reason. nite ch cast. dog with 50 plus won the cast and finished to grand with that win. I shook his hand told him nice job and sat with the good ole boys at the losers table.

Sorry to read this

But, unless I'm missing something, & cast was at trestle with your dog at the bottom, it sounds like someone forgot about the word- sportsmanship. You were already on timeout & only needed to drive around to pick your buddy & dog up. Come to Iowa & I don't think stuff like that will happen. Take care, Ron.

That's kind of like telling a man what he can and can't do on his own lunch break at work!

Toe cutter, next time remind the MOH that UKC say's that anyone can lease, tie, lead, etc. your dog if you give them permission. The HANDLER and only the HANDLER can call the dog but you can let a spectator do the physical handling of the dog.
