Garmin issue, can you help?

I got the Astro 320 receiver. When I put it on the dog feature where the arrow points N,S,E,W the arrow always points in the wrong direction but the right N,S,E,W direction. Example if my dog is straight in front of me which would be North, the arrow would be pointed to my right but showing North on the screen. I have calibrated the receiver. Any thoughts?

When you say "calibrated the receiver" do you mean you calibrated the compass??? I have the Alpha and one of my buddies has the 320...we have both had to repeatedly calibrate the compass several times over the first month of use. Eventually, both devices stopped getting out of whack and neither of us has had to do it for a while now.

Sounds exactly what the problem is...maybe. How do you calibrate the compass? The only calibration I done is where at the beginning it tells you to turnthe device one way, flip on its side and turn over until it says calibrated completed. Is this what your talking about? If so then yes I have. It's very frustrating when your dog is in front of you but the arrow pointing behind you or to the 90 degree opposite. Now the direction of NSEW will be pointed at right on the screen but not in real position.

Remember every time you change batteries you will need to calibrate the compass.

Yep, that is calibrating the compass. One thing to watch out for is this; I carry an old school compass every time I go in the woods anyways just to be certain. Gadgets will break down and even lie but that Silva don't do either. The compass mechanism on the Garmin is very sensitive...if you get close with a regular magnetic compass that will throw it off and also if you are close to someone with another Garmin.
Again, I don't know why we each had to recalibrate ours but I know I did mine at least four times before it seemed like it held it and my buddy with the 320 has done his five or six.
I also remember calling Garmin early on and the lady told me sometime when I wasn't using it to track or train dogs to turn on the receiver and set it out in the yard in the open where it could lock on several satellites and just leave it sit there for an hour or so to get them locked in good. Might want to try this too.

A slight correction, Yard Dog Joker. John Wick did not update your Garmin. In fact, I don’t even know how to update my own outfit. Lisa in my office handles it for me, and it seems that every time an update is done, my system works better. Wonder who you confused me with?

maybe

Maybe you have already solved your problem but sounds to me like your type of battery being used setting may be wrong. Also,i just recently moved up to a 320 from a220 and find i have more range and less droping of signal using normal setting rather than the waas/egnos setting.Any ideas?

Lol John, you read all these posts? I stand corrected, funny how we get older we have brain farts. I had John Wick on the brian when I posted that. I have seen you and Mark Zepp together so many times that I was thinking Mark Zepp but said John Wick. Please forgive me.

Just wondering

Do you happen to be close to a vehicle or atv? There is something magnetic in the front of my Gator that screws up the compass if I get close to it, the compass says that the gator is headed north. If I walk away, it corrects itself.

Yep, that little compass is sensitive...I bought a holder that zip ties to the handle bars of my Grizzly 4 wheeler. It seemed like a good idea. The Alpha snaps into it real tight and I figured I could watch the compass and not have to hold it or get it in and out of a pocket...it didn't work. The steel handlebar that close makes it read off.

compass

I've had my 320 for about two years and I still have to calibrate my compass atleast once every night. 220s don't seam to have that problem. It used to bother me but anymore I just accept that It's going to need to be done.

Ok guys Lovis Burns on the PKC message board gave me the answer and it worked. You have to give the 320 a hard reset. You do this by holding down the maps, enter button at the same time you power on. It will ask you if you want to reset hit yes and enter. Note I was not aware I would loose everything so take out the map card first.

I think what your problem was the setting for TRACK UP had been changed to NORTH UP. I was confused on what your were asking and didn't want to add any more confusion to your problem. Resetting it, took it back to factory setting which is TRACK UP.

Thanks Bruce, no doubt your right, I have played around with it and screwed it up. How do you get to North Up.

.

It is your map setting.

When TRACK UP is selected and you hold the handheld in your hand the screen show the lay of the land the same way you are facing. Road on the right and on the screen the road is on the right. Dogs to the left and on the screen the dogs are to the left.
The compass arrow on the top left of the screen points to nortn.
When NORTH UP is used and you are facing south and lay the handheld in your hand a road on your right side would be on the left side of the screen. Dog on the right would be on the left. Now spin around to face north and things are laid out like they are. Some people use this mode but it is too confusing for me. I want the screen to show what is in front of me.

The alpha you can just touch the N arrow on the top left corner of the screen and jump back and forth between TRACK UP and NORTH UP.
