Numbers don lie but...you have to consider that a "current" stud dog with a number of pups, whatever that number may be, will have a certain number old enough to even have a "title" but many of the pups may not. You just don't know how many of them were really placed into good, fair and capable hands versus how many were purchased by someone that will render them a blank. To me, this is why you really cannot go by the numbers alone. You also have almost no way of knowing which pups went to an owner that just slap don't competition hunt and could care less about a title or degree. Some of the best dogs fit this category.
Now that this info is published each month I want to believe that the owners are at least trying to be a little more picky about who gets a pup. I would also hope they are being picky about the females they breed to as well, if they are looking to get into the top group of reproducers.
The problem with my last statement, and I have said this before, it boils down to the stud dog owner making a very, very tough {for most folks} choice...do I breed to anyone that has the money and buy a new truck...or do I get real picky about the females and just breed to the best, wait till I know I have high prospect buyers for the majority of the litter and get my name in the magazine???
Your question is a very good one and it would be nice if you could really know each stud dog you might be interested in but that is not realistic. To answer your question from my point of view, I consider three things when I am after a stud dog or if I am looking for a pup the dam too{which is at least just as important if not more so}...first I look at the pedigree for what I call common denominators. The dogs you see in many pedigrees that have reproduced well in the past. Second I look at what others have to say about the dogs and this can be tough but if you take your time and listen you can pretty well pick out who is telling the truth. Third I look at the dogs themselves to make sure they are what I like and how I want my pups to be. This is a stupid example, but I personally don't care for big dogs. I never have. 70 pound plus coon dogs are fine but they are just not for me in fact under 60 pounds is even better. Kennel barking, pacing back and forth idiots I am not interested in or dogs with a weak or high pitched voice. If we're talkin' Walkers I like open spotted black headed two brown dots over the eyes {AKA Clover} dogs...but that's just me. The bottom line is if he aint what you like his pups probably wont be either and you might not give them quite as fair the chance they deserve. I've seen that several times. Best of luck.
