First hunt with my hillbilly dog in the NC swamps.
And I am happy as can be. It started off a little slow. I almost forgot I was hunting with a cur that was totally new to me and I to him. My expectations were so high I absolutely forgot reality for a while. But he gave me a dose of it quick.
So after the first turnout and my heart fell to the bottom of my boots we eased around on the 4 wheeler and he went on out and checked back in a couple times and I was still pulling my hair out but I noticed he was getting farther out every check in. I had come down to earth and figured out that a getting acquainted period was probably inevitable when the next check in he checked out and then I saw the cur zig zagging start and knew we were soon to be in business. He got treed and got himself acquainted to our swamps and thickets right off the bat.
He was in such a bad place I couldn't get even close to a decent pic close up to him. I walked as close as I could and just held the camera up over the head to the infrared light illuminated his eyes and shot a few. None were worth a hoot so I saw a leaning tree close and got over on it and got higher and got a couple with the bigger lens that were decent. And yes he had the coon.
I cut him toward a little better place and he lit out of there and in no time was treed again. It wasn't a cake walk either but at least I got some half decent pics and he had that one also. I quit while I was ahead. He is out of shape and of course I am.
I think I have found my coondog now. He has just turned 4 and if we both stay healthy it is gonna be a good ride.
