This isn't always the case and usually bad habits are learned from other dogs.
I would try getting your hands on a fresh coon hide drag it 50 yards, hang it up where he can see it but can't reach it. Cut him loose let him track it and find it hopefully he will tree on it. If he doesn't tie him up at the tree tease him with it but don't let him have it and get him excited. Drag it again fifty yards and tie it up in a tree again, by this time he should be pretty wound up. Cut him loose and hopefully he will tree it this time. If he does do it again but this time run the tree down real good, and hide it in the tree, so he can't see it and has to tree by scent, also make the track longer, and try keeping him in the truck so he can't see where your going. If he doesn't still tree it, I would try hanging a caged coon in a tree and see if he will tree on that. If that doesn't work, he may just need to mature a little
If they can't run and tree a dragged coon I don't think he will run and tree a wild coon. Once they can tree a drag, they should be able to tree an easy wild coon. Finding a spot with the most coon that you know of, take him there over a couple of weeks he should start treeing wild coon.
Over time he will improve and begin to run tougher and harder tracks ideally.
