I ust bought a 10 week old walker pup. I am wondering if any of you had any tips on what and how to do it. Ive always had started dogs and never trained my own. I was thinking something like this:

*use hide/drag to get pup interested
*drag hide to where pup can see it and let her track it
*as time goes on get further with the drag
*once pup becomes comfortable with tracking do a blind track
*about 8-10 months introduce into a live coon
*once she gets comfortable with that release the live coon and let her trail it



Yall let me know yalls thoughts and/or advice......what yall think

Sounds like a good plan to me. The more you get them in the woods at any time is better in my opinion. I used to just take my dog running all the time I could no matter if it was the day time or what. I hunt off of a four wheeler a lot. So id turn him loose and let him follow me everywhere. He was a late starter though I didn't get him until he was eight months old.

Just let the pup free roam till its 6-7 months old and just take it coon hunting!! I dont ever use a drag and i hardly ever have used a cage coon. If its bred in them they will do it. If not you cant make them. Jmo

Thanks for yalls advice. She got good blood in her. Got a wipeout bloodline.Shes gonna be big . Her daddy won a pkc hunt a couple weeks ago around here. As soon as I let her out of the pen to run aroumd after I get home from work her nose goes straight to the ground. Gotta good mouth on her 2

Wipe out are often slow to tree, so be patient with the dog.
They are great track dogs, so you shouldn't have to many issues there.
I was consider take some deer glands and putting them on a mouse trap, when the pup is around 16 weeks, this should imprint the pup negatively about deer.
Wipe out dogs with there heavy track in them can be a little tough to break off of trash.
Play with a coon hide just for a minute or two before feeding this will imprint the pup positively to a coon.
For now though just take it easy on her play with the pup and enjoy the pups company. 12 weeks I would begin your yard work and work on leading, and other basic obedience.
I personally believe this helps improve there brain development much like small children, that are challenged and kept active at a young age. Just keep your lessons short, and be patient.

New trainers all generally try to move to quickly so keep that in the back of your mind, and be patient.

Read as much as you can there are a lot of great training books out there. The art of raising a puppy would be a good place to start.
