Liver colored pups

Several years ago. I had a litter that there was 4 liver colored.
They were line bred on Sexton's Jimmy and about a quarter old Smokey river blood. I did not register the odd colored pups.

The liver comes from the old Birdsong fox dogs registered as English fox and coon hound before the English was called English coon hound and before the Bluetick breed separated from the english breed

Question for Glynn

When I was just a pup myself I saw a beautiful colored Bluetick and I asked my Grandad what kind of dog that was and answered Bluetick. I started asking him where we could get one
and he said we would talk to the man that owned the dog we were looking at. Now bear in mind this was the early sixties and very few people in Rural Alabama owned registered dogs so we paid Mr. Ebin Pate a visit and he told my Grandad that the first Bluetick that I ever saw which is the one mentioned above was from a cross between a Hudspeth and a Black and Tan. My question is, Have you ever heard of a Hudspeth ?

that's fine I like reading what people have to say. I have heard of it before. I could be wrong but I think Ed Parker had some of that blood at one time

Hudspeth Hound

Hudspeth is a strain of foxhounds. There are several strains of foxhound like there are several strains of Blueticks. When I was younger I was like a sponge when it came to anything related to breeding hounds. I read a book about the foxhound strains and how the breeders were using them.

My Daddy and Grand Daddy were fox hunters. We are originally from Louisiana. My grand daddy had several Hudspeth,Goodman,Trigg and July fox hounds.I was born in the early 60s and personally not familar with then other than what my family had as far as fox hounds.

Liver Color from Blueticks

Liver or chocolate is the easiest coat color to breed for because it depends upon a single recessive gene. It is not dependent upon breeding to a "liver colored bird dog." In dogs the following results are predictable. Black to black-majority black, but any other color can appear except merle. Brindle to brindle-mostly brindles, a minority of fawns. Liver to liver-majority liver other colors are possible but not blue, merle or black. Yellow to yellow-usually only yellows or yellow and white. These are a few examples. It would help if we had a standard color chart so that everyone would agree on what a certain color is. Wives tales and repeating gossip regardless of how old it is, contributes to our lack of progress as a breed. Many times we are successful in spite of ourselves. Now to answer your question-there is a greater chance of getting a liver colored Bluetick when you use inbred or line bred dogs because if these dogs carry the recessive gene in their Genotype (not visible) and the pups who get the recessive gene from both parents it will be visible (liver colored) in the Phenotype (what you see)
