Hunt?

Has there ever been a hunt where grade dogs are put up against some of the nite champs and so on? I know I have never hunted in a hunt and have some interest in it just to see what its about. 1 of the reasons I never hunted in a nite hunt was because I never had dogs with papers when I was growing up and now I only have 2 that do. I was just curious too see what the outcome would be. I know in my 20 odd years of coon hunting I have hunted with a bunch of nite champs, gr nitech's and so on and from what I have seen the titled dog was not always the better dog. I just think it would be interesting to see who has the winning dog when its all said and done.

You can register anything in pkc and then hunt that night. Dont matter if it has papers or not.

Why would a fancy piece of paper make a dog better or worse? That's ridiculous.

When I started the hunts, I never had a registered dog and hunted the Grade Class,, the man who always guided and judged us would enter his Nt Ch, more than not in Grade's to have something to hunt as he judged us kids,, We all thought it was cool,, and I never did win,, but sometimes he would get beat,,

I have never hunted in any type of comp hunt. But I would like to check it out and maybe give it a try. I have hunted with a bunch of dogs that have been hunted in the hunt. Some of those guys will still hunt with me some won't because of a grade dog I had when I was young. Man to this day he was the fastest track dog I have ever seen. A lot of those guys didn't like that at all. He was more times than not a 1st and 1st kind of dog. Not throwing off on any ones dog but most of the comp dogs I have hunted with haven't impressed me much. But on the other hand a few have. But it has been very few.

I have seen some really nice dogs that didn't have any papers. One of them I found running down the road one day. Never found the owner, called around and finally just started hunting her. She was a middle aged nice looking walker female. She had a common mouth, but an uncommon ability to tree coons. I hunted her for a year with some pups and gave her to a kid to hunt.

That being said, if they dont have any papers, they are not worth anything to me, but that does not make them any less of a coon dog.

Thanks Ole Hoss, Yeah man I like my coon hunting. I have never comp hunted but would like to check it out. I have been looking at some of the rules and some make sense and some are greek to me LOL. It just make me think how would some of my hounds and past hounds have looked in the hunts.. I think I have had some grade hounds that would have done pretty good in the hunts. I know they sure looked good at times against some titled hounds I have hunted with. A few of those guys still will not hunt with me because of the grade hound I had when I was young. He sure made a bunch of titled dogs look like pups on a few nights....

Reading the rules sound like greek to me too. I just put my boots on and jumped in head first!!! I started right here at the local club and i ask so many questions on the first few hunts i made the judge sick!!! I hunted in the spring baby stakes and the pkc walker days!! I try to hunt in every club hunt we have and i might jump in the truck and drive a hour and a half to get to a hunt. I put a first place on my pup and got $235 won on him. Im the type of person that has to learn on his own. So ive learned alot of dos and donts. But i had a great time doing it. Out of all those cast i had a good time except for one cast. You will enjoy your self im telling you and its a great way to meet new people that love the sport like we do.

I've seen a lot of worthless dogs in the hunts and a few good ones.I have no idea why some waste there time forcing there dog through the hunts. When they finally get a title on there worthless dog it's still worthless.Titles dont change a dog.The hole point is for you to show up with your dog and prove yours is better. So if you believe you have a true blue coondog that go for it.You will learn quick and have fun.Another thing about the hunts is you will find out if these hot top stud dogs are throwing coondogs or idiots. It was a real eye opener for me.I found out some of these hyped up studs are not throwing coontreers like they claim.Jmo
