The number of pups is determined by the eggs the female produces and when the stud gets his load on board. The sex of the pups is determined by the stud. Females generally tend to have larger litters their second and third time which is desirable when compared to the first litter. Mother natures way sorta speak of not over burdening a new mother. It doesn't say anything about your dog other than he is fertile and average when it comes to sex selection.

If you have to ask this question, you should go to the library and check out a basic book on dog breeding and genetics. Tom

Yes, if I had a "stud dog"., I feel it would be of great value to know how the canine reproductive system operates. Tom

Sorry, I didn't look at it as "bickering", I thought I was offering a suggestion that might give you some insight. Tom

A lot of that has to do with timing. My experience has shown if you breed a female after she starts to ovulate, you have a better chance at having more females in the litter than males.

I cannot point you to scientific evidence to back that up, but that has been my experience.

With bull semen, they can now sex it to where you have an 80 to 90% chance at producing the desired sex you want. Texas A & M has a machine that can separate the semen before they freeze it just for that purpose.

The guys that supply the stock for the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) events are using it to increase their odds of producing quality bulls for their stock inventory while breeders of first time heifers are breeding for heifer calves to decrease the chance of birthing complications.
