The last litter I had, I had her in a air conditioned shed. She did fine. I mix some high quality feed with some can dog food and leave it in there. Most females will not eat for a few days and when they do, they really only nibble. In a couple of weeks she probably will gain her appetite.

Most females will go off their food for a few days right after whelping. You can try adding milk to the feed or pouring some bacon grease over her food.

Tractor Supply sells 4 Health canned feed. Its very inexpensive but good feed. Our female just started eating good and her litter is almost 2 wks old. I soak dry feed in water then mix a half can in. Warm it in microwave for 15 secs.

Good luck!

is there any discharge at all?
check her temp - 102 is max

just had a TW had pups last monday, quit eating by wed/thur. discharge. vet on friday. had a pup stuck and full of infection. c-section & spay. still at vet. infection had gotten into her teats. luckily the blue had pups 2wks prior and is nursing them.

just because they quit eating is not always a normal thing. if you're worried, better to be safe than sorry. check the temp and if ANY elevation - GET TO THE VET!!!

I will feed a nursing bitch anything and everything she wants - she needs as many calories as I can get into her. Some favorites here are:

macaroni and cheese
canned chicken
canned tuna
scrambled eggs and cheese
cottage cheese
yogurt
vanilla ice cream (all full fat varieties, not low or fat free)
ground beef and turkey
sardines
puppy kibble
Royal Canin puppy mousse

Most of mine will eat more if I hand feed and if I indulge her at no other time in her life, I will indulge her while she is nursing.

another good thing to add to mom and pups diet is Puppy Gold. that stuff is pricey but well worth it. it has dehydrated colostrum in it. I've used it for the last several litters Ive had.

.

Here is what I find. I am going through this myself right now so I am speaking from fresh experience.
Here is some background.
Female 8 years old never been bred.
10 pups born-2 died first night.
3 weeks later 8 still doing good.

This female has always ate dry dog food and perhaps not the best---Retriever brand from tractor supply.
She was hunted regular and actually in comp hunt 7 days before the pups were born.

When she had the 8 pups my first thought was to try and doctor her dog food and get more food into her so she would have more milk. My better sense said DO NOT DO THIS. You only mess up their digestive system and they are going through enough. I kept her on the dry food and she continues to eat well and actually would not know she had pups if not for the enlarged breast. She is going through a lot and yes she needs to eat but OVER REACTION by you can do more to upset the apple cart right now if feed gets switched. Taking care of 3 pups should be fairly easy for her.
I hope everything goes well with your dog and pups and I would come up with a plan but I guess I am saying don't change it too many times. The most I would do is take the same dry feed she was eating before and soften it with water maybe a little beef broth and a half can of quality dog food.

My pups are 3 weeks old and I have wormed them once and have them eating twice a day. I put the same feed the mom eats in a blender and pulverized it. I mix it with beef broth and water to make a mush out of it. They love it.

Cynthia, I hope your dog recovers and does well.

thanks. the TW wasnt mine but she is back home and is unable to nurse. so my bluetick is nursing/weaning her 11 and nursing the tw 5. was told to add a calcium tab daily to her as all this nursing & milk production will draw her down as far as calcium levels and do harm.

add in some puppy food and increase feedings before pups born. add puppy gold to mom & then to pup's mush. that is about all I do different with a normal delivery.
