Keeping dogs cool in the dog box during summer

What does everyone do to keep dogs cooler in the dog box during the summer? Do you use dog box pads, straw, ice packs ect. Just trying to get some ideas. Thanks!

SUMMER

i have a old summer box that is made from cattle panels that I sometimes use. most the time just chain them in the back of the truck. you can freeze 1 or 2 liter plastic pop bottles and put them in the dog box with em, it helps.

I usually just worry about keeping myself cool

I would just freeze gallon jugs of water and run a bungee cord through the handle on the jug and hook it on the divider of the dog box. Its cheap, it works, and as it melts you can give the dog a drink.

Keeping Cool

Leave your tailgate down. It really helps the air move through the box.

Also give your dog a couple minutes at the truck to cool off before loading them back up.

If you have good vents on your dog box, you should be good to go. I know I wanted to know how hot the aluminum diamond plate dog boxes got. So I parked it in the sun during July at 3:00 pm in the afternoon, and crawled inside. I was in it for 30 minutes. The blue plastic lining does a good job of not transferring the heat.

Of course I do still follow common sense ideas like not parking in the sun, providing lots of water, and frequent stops on long trips.

I take enough water that they can get a drink after each drop. What is left in the bowl gets dumped on them. They can be taught to drink as you dump it from a water bottle also.

Redman, that would be a nice feature. Unfortunately I don't have one of those but I bet it sure is nice in the summer.

I keep empty soda bottles and freeze them throw about 6-7 or more in each side first remove any bedding. This way they have to lay around hem. Then when they need a drink I give them that water. Been to events where dogs would not drink the water. Keep side vents open and tailgate down.

I always used the frozen pop bottles too. it does a good job of keeping the box cool and its nice to have the cold water on hand as it melts. I also kept an ice chest in the back of the truck full of pop and bottled water for me too .

if you have a dog thats a chewer the water bottles may not last and a chance they could swallow the lids. if you have a freezer, you can take a 2" pvc pipe, cap it on one end and put a screw plug on the other. fill 1/2 - 3/4 full and freeze lying flat. put one or two in each side of box and they can lay on them to keep cool. ive used this before and it works great.

get some fans and put on the doors. if you have rear vents, they work really well w/ fans.

just be sensible and if you think its hot, then its really hot for your dog. more ppl are on the lookout for distressed dogs these days and if they see one panting they think its in distress. try to do anything you can afford to keep them comfortable.

I work on commercial chillers and equipment we insulate chiller barrels and other equipment with insulation called armor flex you can get it in 4x4 sheets pretty cheap and I insulated my dog box with that top sides and bottom you get glue for it and just cut to fit and clue it on dogs don't seem to mess with it and my dog box stays cool all the time and warm in the winter plus I also do the water jugs my center divider is made of expanded metal so air flow goes across both sides with vents open and I have insulated water tank on top and keep plenty of water in side dog box never have problems with dogs getting hot and I leave them in box until next morning and they are just about asleep before I get home lol

What are the signs of heatstroke?
Signs of heatstroke include:

Increased heart rate
Excessive panting
Increased salivation
Bright red tongue
Red or pale gums
Thick, sticky saliva
Depression
Weakness
Dizziness
Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
Diarrhea

As heatstroke progresses, it can cause seizures, coma, cardiac arrest, and death.

What should I do if my dog gets heatstroke?
Remove your dog from the hot area immediately. Prior to taking him to your veterinarian, lower his temperature by wetting him thoroughly with cool water (for very small dogs, use lukewarm water), then increase air movement around him with a fan. Be careful, however, as using very cold water can actually be counterproductive. CAUTION: Cooling too quickly and especially allowing his body temperature to become too low can cause other life-threatening medical conditions. The rectal temperature should be checked every 5 minutes. Once the body temperature is 103ºF, the cooling measures should be stopped and your dog should be dried thoroughly and covered so he does not continue to lose heat. Even if your dog appears to be recovering, take him to your veterinarian as soon as possible, he should still be examined since he may be dehydrated or have other complications.

Swimming allows your dog to cool down his body temperature when overheated Allow free access to water if your dog can drink on his own. Do not try to force-feed cold water; as he may inhale it and could choke.

How can heatstroke be prevented?

Keep pets with predisposing conditions like heart disease, obesity, older age, or breathing problems cool and in the shade. Even normal activity for these pets can be harmful.

Provide access to water at all times.

Do not leave your pet in a hot parked car even if you're in the shade or will only be gone a short time. The temperature inside a parked car can quickly reach up to 140 degrees.

Make sure outside dogs have access to shade.

On a hot day, restrict exercise and don't take your dog jogging with you. Too much exercise when the weather is very hot can be dangerous.

Do not muzzle your dog.

Avoid places like the beach and especially concrete or asphalt areas where heat is reflected and there is no access to shade.

Wetting down your dog with cool water or allowing him to swim can help maintain a normal body temperature.

Move your dog to a cool area of the house. Air conditioning is one of the best ways to keep a dog cool, but is not always dependable. To provide a cooler environment, freeze water in soda bottles, or place ice and a small amount of water in several resealable food storage bags, then wrap them in a towel or tube sock. Place them on the floor for your pet to lay on.

I worked in the oil field for a long time. On some of the trips I would take a dog to hunt. I use a mop bucket and fill it with Ice. I have had my box in direct sun at 105 on a asphalt parking lot and the dog will not even be panting. Dogs cool them self through there mouths. They just keep their head over the bucket breathing and its like an air conditioner for them. They have cool water to drink and it works great. I would put fresh ice in at lunch and they where fine all day.
