If you had to pick one of three???

You can only pick one 1) I would breed to(if male) or get a pup (if female) of the World Champion 2) I would breed to the sire of the champion or get a pup out of their dam 3) I would just hire the handler Just like to see what others think?? I know what my pick would be if I were in this game.

2 !

1-no matter how good the dog is ,it still may not reproduce. although there usually some good money to be made the first year or so. 3-if the dog isnt good enuff to win , i most likely wouldnt enjoy hunting with the handler!........just my thoughts, good question for an old guy to think of!!!!!

If you chose 3, then you have never hunted against Andy Abts or Brian Layton. And if you have been paying attention, you know what my answer would be. (hint: L's In It To Win It Lil Moose)

Richard---

Did you name him that because of "Lil" Red winnings?? I seen Moose at Tom's and I don't think there was any spotted blood in him----SSSSOOOO it's not in the parents or grand parents, IT HAS TO BE WITH HIS HANDLER!!!! And I would like to ask a man as yourself whos hunted everywhere but the Moon, for every "nice" handler out there who's a square shooter, honest and fun to compete against----how many are not?? I mean those that will do what it takes, to their own mothers, to come out on top. I can say that I have only guided one cast where ALL 4 HANDLERS were top class act handlers. Been on a lot were 2 were super and the other 2's mothers should have used better birth control. Best of luck with the little guy and hope he does you proud.

Mr. Old Man, I would say that the vast majority of handlers are fair and honest. If you treat them with respect and are fair then they will be that way also. If you start out paranoid, with a chip on your shoulder or a smart aleck attitude, then you are not going to have a very good time. Also if you don't know the rules, you are going to have a hard time. The vast majority of people that "think" that they got cheated, didn't. It seems that some people get "cheated" all of the time while others don't ever get "cheated". I wonder why that is? A lot of times you just get a bad break or have some bad luck or your dog does something wrong. It happens, you just have to suck it up and go on. You can't blame it on the rest of the cast. I do know of a lot of people that never get beat. They think that their dog is always the best so if they lose then they must have been cheated. Human nature being what it is, you are always going to have a few bad apples. If you lined up 10 strangers on the street, how many of them would be honest if they were in some sort of competition. Go to a Little League ball game and check out the parents in the grandstands some time. Ask them how many times their kids get cheated. Competition coonhunting is just a reflection of everyday life. Some people can't stand the nite hunts but then some people can't even stand their own lives also. Don't go by the stories you hear, even mine, because I might not always tell the truth. I hate to get beat just like everyone else. Get out there and experience it for yourself. And 98% of the time, the dog makes the handler, the handler does not make the dog.

Nicely said Richard. Out of all the cast I have been in the last few years I can remember only a couple of bad cast. The guys on those cast were known for doing what they do and most people know about it. So with that said I would say that 95% of the cast I go on are really fun and enjoyable. I have learned that most of the time you make a cast for what it is. Sometimes dogs are dogs and they mess and sometimes look really stupid in the woods, and as long you know that going in to a hunt and don't try to make a dog better than it is you will have fun. I get more upset when I mess up on a bad call than I do when the dogs messes up . Happy hunting!!!

Thanks---

but I'm not talking about "getting cheated"--I've been in enough sporting events, from local to the national level and love competition and to go head to head with the best of them. If you think parents are butts at a baseball game, go to a volleyball game!! Been doing this long enough to know that each cast "should" have a winner and it's not always going to be you. Also know that when you think you know all the answers to the rules, you don't. I was talking about those that cheat to win. To me in a hunt, you call your hound, strike---tree, plain and simple. The best two cast I've been on at ARCA Days were with Terry Hayes in WI and Bo Parker in IA. The hounds were called---coon where scored and we went on. Didn't have handlers not help shine, didn't have anyone call someone else's hound and didn't circle any 4 inch trees that a field mouse couldn't hide up. But, thanks to all that do comp hunt because without your money, Allen would be without a job and just think how high reg. fees would be!!! Happy hunting to everyone and may at least all your trees be able to be circled??

Richard....i love that last line....but somewhere over the last 3 years you seem to have flip flopped ..... because recently you have made comments that seem to say the opposite....so which is it

Can't a feller change his mind? Sorry but I am not a politician. Sometimes I change my mind about something 2 or 3 times in one day. I hope that you don't make any decisions based on what I say.
If you read that closely, I said that 2% of the time the handler makes the dog. So for every 10 big winners, 2 of them were manmade.

Well then, 2 out of every 100. My poor brain is getting overloaded with all of these reruns.
But that was almost 4 years ago. Maybe it is up to 20% now.

I thought all you seniors did was sit around and watch Archie Bunker, Andy Griffith, and Gunsmoke re-runs and wax nostalgic about the good old days?

As we get older our mind might slip some, our minds are like a computer the older the computer the more memory we have and it just takes it longer to get back to the front of our mind.
