dog has loose screw???

Ive been hunting this pup since he was 6 months old. He split treed with a coon at 7 months old and ive hunted him alone 75 percent of the time every since. He just turned a yr old last week. I havent missed 15 nights since i got this pup. With that said ive constantly worked on him. Leading, treeing opposums, covering dogs, barking in the box and all other pup stuff. This dog is crazy cause he doesnt take well to correction. Ive switched him. Shocked him and he just continues to do the same things. I have put a 1st place win on him with 575 plus. Hes got $244 won in pkc but he just still cant seem to pull it togather. Every night its the same ole thing. Wants to pull you down. Switch across the nose and hes alright for a lil bit then back to pullin. Shocked for going to other dogs and still continues to go to them. Opposums? Whooped, shocked, even tied one to his neck for a few days and that seemed to help but still bout every 2 weeks he trees one. My ? Is do you all think he has a loose screw or something. Ive been thinkin this for a few months but last night my buddy mention it after i kept beating on him for barking on the lead while his dog was running track. He just kept barking no matter what i done. Every pup ive had before a couple switchs and they learn to lead. This pup is awful nice to give up on but **** he gets under my skin with this stuff. Any body got a clue?

Get a choke chain collar. Not the plain chain. The one with the spikes in the neck. INSTANT pull stopper...dont hurt the dog. Only 4-5 times walked with this type choke spike collar and he will be broke from pulling...once in a while may have to use it once to keep. the training but it works and FAST.

As far as the rest. Id be happy with that dog. Possum? Big deal..it happens. If he trees coon and has won then why worry. Gotta remember he is still a dog.

I seen a guy switch his dogs for things before and they stopped hunting for him.

Trust me. That spike choke collar works INSTANT. Dont use regular choke chain they dont work but the spikes work with no harn to dog....try it.

This doesn't always work, I had one beagle that I swear would've put those spikes into his neck without so much as a second thought.

Sounds to me like you have got one of those dogs that is not there to please you, but rather to follow his instincts. I was hunting with a friend last week and my female barked the whole time the other dog was hunting, we put a shock collar on her andleft her, and you could hear when she got shocked but she'd just keep doing it, but by the end of the night, she'd figured out to shut up

He sounds like he's just a little high strung. Prolly coon crazy to if I had to guess. Just keep on hunting him. Run him on a 4 wheeler or something daily. Might take the edge off.

.

The going to other dogs I would not worry about right now because with the things mentioned you are almost correcting for too many things at one time. Yes they should never get away with anything but make your list a priority and maybe e the bottom two slow down a little on.

The leading and barking would be my #1,2

Barking in the box a bark collar should solve with no connection to you.
Leading, that should be you and him in the evening in the yard. e-collar should solve that quickly.

You just need to get a handle on these things slowly without breaking his spirit. If your not careful you will have a three year old dog that locks up when shocked and confused what to do.

Possums don't encourage it or accept it without some penalty. With the other stuff going on get a handle on that first. Then when your down to just the possum thing, take some stiff action.

Going to the other dogs would be something I would have to evaluate. If he is all ears then thats a problem. Getting yours and some of theirs isn't all that bad.

Billy you had the pups litter mate up their last year. The lockbox female out of the gyp fancy!! You sold her to a guy in georgia and i just bought her too. Naw hes not for sale. Workin on this pup in the day time isnt gonna help this pup. During the day hes fine!!! Doesnt pull on the lead. You can drop the lead and he will follow you. When it gets dark and that tail gate drops he gets stupid!! He is nutts and has his mind on one thing and thats gettin treed. Really accurate. I am gonna have to cut down on correcting on every thing at once though. I agree that will ruin one.

Red Rebels. The spike choke collars do work. May have toremove links until it puts the right bite on the dog but once adjusted it works.

Had a walker that was unreal awful drag u around pulling. Put spike collar on him. He ran hit end of lead, spun a few times and then set down and refused to move lol..

Never had a dog not lead right in just a few minutes. I like to leave regular collar on and hook one end of lead to regular collar and other end to spike chain. When pulling i put pressure on chain. When leading right i focus on the regular collar.

The key is getting enough links out of the chain that when the dog pulls the spikes can do their thing.

Sounds like he doesn't respect YOU. You've got to sit down with this hound and start working with what he's doing right. Let him know you respect him for finding coons. Make sure he knows that its worth pleasing YOU. Then work on the problems. He's still a pup.

Sounds like he's got all the heart in the world, but may not be the right dog for you. Find some patience and you may have a real good one,.

read this, then re-read it. for possums I have had better luck breaking them from running them to begin with then trying to break them from treeing them. everytime for the next few weeks you see one cross the road let hime out and as soon as he smells it bust him with the electric. refresher every so often. deer are the same

You have already got a lot of very good advice. So I'll say this ITS A PUP. Give him some time and keep working with it. Most of the time a dog will settle down when they get a little age on them. You can't be like a guy I know and shoot possums out to his dog then a few days later get mad a beat the heck out of the dog for treeing them. I get tickled at him he gets so mad at this dog every time it does something wrong or runs off game. He will shock her but he waits and lets it run it forever before he does. Then gets mad and puts her in the box and will not hunt her the rest of the night and swears he's gonna sell her or kill her. 1 Word man "PATIENCE". Do the same thing every time and it will catch on. But it takes time. Just like my buddy her swore she was a coon hound because she treed a few coons, Now this dog would run a gnat fart. I have given him some advice and he is following it the other night she bumped some trash and I said man that's a deer. He said light her up I toned her with my system and she came back. She is showing signs of improvement but it has taken a LONG time to get her where I have gotten her and she still needs a LOT of work. But given time and the right direction she will be a tough one to clean after when finished out.
