Garmin Idea

Not sure if the folks from Garmin read this forum, but I'm sure there are Reps on here...

Now, I know this would diminish repeat sales, but it sure would be nice to place a transmitter in the 320 receiver, so it would have it's own IDnumber.

That would allow your friend's receiver to find yours, when it is lost in the woods.

That would be a great feature!

The Alpha has a feature like this. I'm not sure what it is called but I think it is buddy tracker or something like that. It is a good idea to get your friend's in there not only so you can find a lost Garmin but also if something happens to your friend while hunting, someone will be able to find them in a timely manner.

Agreed, Paul!

I heard it was a feature in the Alpha, which means it would not be a stretch to have it built into the Astro. But again, it might diminish the sales they want for the Alpha!

I've heard some good things about the Alpha, but I sure like the Astro! I'm not big on an all touch-screen solution...

And although I like the range during tracking, I have absolutely no desire to reach-out and shock a dog, when I don't know exactly what they're doing. So I can't justify the increased expense for collars, with features I don't need or a receiver that I have to take my gloves off to use! Call me a wimp, but it get's cold up here in Wisconsin! And I know the same goes for Michigan.

Yep... His loss triggered me to think about this again! Joe and I have discussed several times, especially after he lost his too!

I lost my 220 once, but was lucky enough to retrace my steps.

I like the bright orange of the 320, but that's a pretty minor attempt at a solution, for the likes of Garmin.

I cut strips of reflective tape and stuck it to the sides and wrapped the rubber duck anttena. I put it on my shocking controller also. It helps I lost my shocker o e night flipped my light on and see. It from 50 yards away where I hopped a down tree. It won't help in every case though. I guess I find myself checking my hip before I take off every time.

Jim, I saw your response on Daniel's FB post... Can I assume that's not thick winter gloves? A capacitive touch screen, can sense your fingers through some material, but usually nothing too thick.

The buddy tracker feature on the Alpha is a very postive feature. Especially if you hunt alone. If something happens, your buddy can find your location. I'll buy one for that reason. The other night we were hunting in a swampy bottom. When we arrived at the tree, my buddy said his dog lost the garmin collar. When he checked the location, it was 70 feet away in a murky swamp. He turned on the lighting feature the Alpha offers and we could see the relection of the light thru the muck. Another great feature!

I have a buddy that lost his first two Astros. His third one is now zip tied to a foot long 2 X 4. He just carries it in his hand. When he needs both hands at a tree he sticks the bottom of the 2 X 4 in his back pocket. Every time I hunt with him I spend the first half hour laughing.

I told him he should put an eye bolt on the other end and hook his lead strap to it. Then maybe mount the head of his light to it. He could have a pretty nice coon hunting contraption.

Just make sure you get the patent in place, before the grand unveiling at the Oaks!

Is there an "App" for that... he could make a decent side-business out of it!

Well... I could have really used that feature this weekend! I lost my 320 receiver while I was back in Indiana!

The only good news is that there are "cyber weekend" sales going on and Cabelas, had a 320/DC40 combo for just $399! So... Christmas will come early this year, according to my wife!

Funny story... I got a call yesterday from a friend back home in Indiana who's friend was out mushroom hunting and found an orange Garmin!

He put batteries in it and fired it up, to learn that the owner, deer hunted near Monterey, Indiana also hunted in Wisconsin and who's dogs were called Roughneck 1 and 2!!!

My buddy heard all that and said, I think I know who the owner is!

What a small world...

Just a idea and what I do. The bottom of the 320 has a slot big enough to feed a boot lace through, and tie it to itself (making a loop). I do this then clip the loop around the strap on my bibs or chaps. If I wear my vest it has a clip for it. The trick is to leave the boot lace/loop long enough that if it does fall out of your pocket the 320 will swing enough, while walking, you will feel it hit your leg. Then you know to put it back in your pocket.

When I was up hunting in the mountains my cousin had 3 GPS units. They would show us each other. I'm not sure what make but it was nice when he shot a bear and I was able to walk over to him to help pack it out.
