Stomach will usually bloat.Dog will stop eating and drinking.

We lost a dog to this in 1992. Bloating for sure but our dog was drinking water almost constantly. He would pace and acted like he was in distress or in pain. We didn't know anything about this condition at the time. One thing I will never forget is the sound he made...he sounded like a sheep when they baa. A dog can be saved if you get them to the vet QUICK. This progresses very quickly and they will be gone before you know it.

Trying to drink lots of water and usually can't swallow the water. Pacing and digging as they are in pain. Survival rate is less than 10%.
You need to catch it in the first few hrs as the stomach tissue dies quickly.

I've lost two to Gastric Distortion. Bloat is also very painful. The stomach will show distention...at first it looks like they are very full. I have heard of a relief until you get them to the vet but I am not schooled near enough to attempt it. It involves use of a large gauge hypodermic needle placed between two of the ribs to release the built up gas but I don't know which ribs or how big of a needle you need to use. If you save the dog the vet will generally tie their stomach to their rib cage to inhibit future distortion BUT that is no guarantee that it will not happen again. I lost a half littermate to Northern Rex to this. Almost made me give up the sport. I had been looking for a dog like her for twenty years and lost her to this horrible death.
