I use the 55 gallon drums and they work well. I put a cinderblock up against mine so they won't roll. No there not hard to clean.

Place two 2x4's on the bottom of it and run a few screws through the barrel to the boards. Thats the simplest way to do it. And to clean just shake em out and wash the inside out with a water hose let it dry for an hour and replace the bedding....

I make pedestals out of treated lumber and have even put platforms on top of the barrel for the dogs to lay on. You can make it out of what ever kind of wood you want to. Probably cost you around $20.00 to do 2 barrels.

I wash mine out with clorox and the water hose when ever they need it.

whats the best way to mount them on the outside of the kennel i figured it would give more room since 2 of my kennels are small i have chain link kennells has anyone thought of cutting them in half and riveting hinges on one sid and a latch on the other to be able to open it to get bedding out and put fresh in

Treated Plywood inside the kennel, barrel on the outside and bolt it together... Put the nuts on the outside.

I know your wanting more room but I prefer my houses inside my kennels. Easy to clean, move around and replace if needed.

Gotta keep them well-bedded and a fairly tight door on them and they work very well

I have seen people that live up north just take 1 barrel and cut both ends off and slide it on another barrel to have 2 layers for winter time. But for the door i just cut up half of the circle just enough where the dog can get in so you can have a good lip on it to hold the bedding in and not as much wind gets in it.

Did NC ban the use of barrels for a dog house?

Not to my knowledge. I used to live in carolina about a year ago and the only thing they were trying to pass was chaining dogs up and i dont think that was passed.

Watch those plastic barrels in the summer months. Keep them in the shade or they turn into greenhouses and are very very hot inside. They do work well in the cold with good dry bedding though.

dog boxes

if it were me i would build them out of plywood on the out side of kennel and put them flush to the outside of kennel fence then cut the fence out around the opening for the dog to go in box fasten wire to box worked good for me the barrell thing might work ok but i think more of my dogs than to make them stay in a dang barrell jmo
