The Perfect Track Conditions

Just debating the perfect track conditions with another coon hunter, thought I'd see what is considered best by most.

IMO. Dry short grass in a open field, with no wind and a wet coon. Or same as before, but with a momma coon that's been nursing kittens and gotten wet.

My cousin says dry coon, muddy creek bank.

Track conditions

After a spring shower, woods have a damp feel. Coons wet from the rain, and just keeps gettin wet and leaving a better scent trail. I know the dog doesn't care, but I prefer that.

Tracking

Figured a momma coon would be extra stinky being in a den with kittens, say crossed a creek and got wet. And yes I know it don't matter. Just for the sake of conversation. Or we can all bicker like normal some more?

I hunt black dogs so I don't know that track conditions make a difference. Just unsnap and walk to trees full of eyes.

Just wait for another month or two. You'll have people saying...I think my dog went silent.....momma coon. As for the rest of what I meant I LIKE a rising barometer. Scent lifts better. The heavier air isn't pushing scent down. A condition I don't like is when the ground first freezes or a dropping barometer. Scenting conditions change drastically when the ground first turns hard and it takes a couple of days for the dogs to adjust sometimes.....and I have black dogs...and at times they struggle. Anybody that says different is as full of crap as a Christmas goose!!!

Here in NW Missouri it has rained some, but seems like it has been a little tuff hitting a hot track till LATE at night. Pulled my first tick off Tuesday night, haven't seen any on the dogs yet.

Here in New Mexico the best tracking conditions is when the wind isn't blowing. It's dry here most of the time, but it rained here last summer. I don't remember what day, in July or August. If you see a tick here, he's packing a canteen. When the wind is blowing, it takes all the scent away, especially on top of the ridges.

Perfect tracking conditions

Well boys I now have a new take on perfect tracking conditions.....went solo again tonight the wind was blowing about 3 to 5mph out of the south west, there was something on the ground I used to see a lot in the past I think they call it dew or something idk been to long since I saw any,but Joker tree me 4 coon in the first 30 minutes of our hunt, then took off and finally got over 200 yards in and stuck a runner that lasted all of 30 minutes fell treed about 550 yards, turned him again same thing.....long story short we tracked and treed 10 coon from 12:30 to 3:00 prolly could of treed more but, working over 50 hours a week and huntin 25 to thirty will make an old man out of you QUICK!!

I was in pretty open pasture, with hedgerows running threw it,turned out on a lil pond and the coon were taking to the trees....got good coon numbers and a hell of a track dog,but he lacks in tree power. Well any way when I had walkers they would never tree on this place just run threw it and we would walk under 10 to 15 going to em
